Um, how much chocolate can dogs eat?

Both kids came to find me on the computer.  DS apparently left part of an uneaten ice cream cone in there.  With the dog.  Needless to say, came back and half of the ice cream cone was already gone and I threw the rest in the trash after snatching it from the dog.

Problem:  it was a cookies n' cream ice cream cone so the cone was that oreo kind of sugar cone AND I think it might have been coated on the inside with chocolate.  Thankfully, the bottom which is a solid chunk of chocolate in the tip, she did not get a chance to eat.

She's a big dog -- over 80 lbs.  Do I just need to wait and see if she reacts?  Feed her something else?  Hope she pukes her guts out outside?  No idea but thought I'd ask here as I'm off to google.  TIA!

  • Wait and see.  She's a pretty big dog and I doubt there's much chocolate in an oreo cone.

  • That doesn't sound like enough chocolate to affect an 80 pound dog.  My dog is 75 pounds and once ate 4 pieces of chocolate (a Whitman's sampler box) without any issues.

Just keep an eye on her and make sure that her heart doesn't start racing or anything like that.

  • She's good. Milk chocolate doesn't do much. If it was dark chocolate, then you worry.
A big old middle finger to you, stupid Nest.
  • Our dog (45lbs) got pretty sick after eating ALL of the chocolate (dark and milk) out of our Xmas stockings.  Maybe 2lbs of chocolate?  Anyway, I don't think an ice cream cone would really big a big deal.  Especially if it's milk chocolate.
  • I think the dog will be fine.  Liberty just ate a box of chocolate fudge pudding mix a few hours ago and she seems fine.  I think dogs have to eat a lot of chocolate for it to have any serious effects.

  • My 12 pound Italian greyhound once at a 6 oz solid chocolate easter bunny.   She barfed chocolate all over my bed at 2 am and was fine.  But call the vet if it puts your mind at ease.
