Another pumping ???

Aside from the pump, bottles and bra, what else should I bring? And how many bottles do I bring with me?

Re: Another pumping ???

  • I would take 3 bottles with me; two attached to the pump to pump into and one to attach after pumping ( if I pumped more then once I would need another).  After pumping I would consolidate the milk into one bottle and put a cap in it and put it into my cooler bag.  I also always had an extra set of membranes just invade.  I kept the flanges in a gallon zip lock bag, never know when you might need a zip lock bag.

  • Something to read :)

Not sure if you're planning to store in the fridge, but I used a small cooler bag, which worked well. I used these Avent cups for storage - cheaper than bottles, and they fit well in the cooler I used. (I didn't like the nipples that went with them, I think they were leaky, or maybe just bigger that I liked)!

Oh - and ditto on the ziploc bag!

  • Don't forget a water bottle or something too.

I used to get really thirsty (it felt like the liquid was flowing straight through sometimes) when nursing or pumping.  I realized the little cups by the water cooler in the office just didn't cut it any longer.

  • I always brought 6 bottles with me, cooler bag, pump, extra horns and extra valves were in my desk (had both break on me once at work).  Also had some milk storage bags in my desk just in case.

  • Here's what I have in my bag:
cooler bag with 4 Medela bottles & the ice pack (all came with my pump)
Rescue Remedy pastilles (supposed to help calm you to get a letdown)
    handsfree bra
gallon ziploc with a small washcloth, flanges & connectors
    baggie with lactation cookies
    Motherlove nipple cream

I also bring a hair tie, my iPhone and a bottle of water.  I've been pumping on my commute home, so for that I also have my nursing cover and a plug for the car lighter.  Emergency supplies in my pump bag: a couple milk storage bags and a couple disposable nursing pads.  I really should throw in some membranes.

I found that if I put a little nipple cream on before pumping it doesn't hurt so much.   Also, make sure you have the right size flanges.  I pumped 6 months with Jack and didn't figure out that my flanges were too small until a couple months in this time.  The bigger flanges made a big difference in comfort and a noticeable difference in output.  I've been back at work for about 3wks now and have found that the routine (I do things in the same order every time I pump) helps me get a letdown.  Like a friend said recently, my boobs are now like Pavlov's dogs.  I start getting everything set up to pump and I often get a letdown before I even turn the pump on.
