DH & I accidentally walked into our dream house this weekend and are suddenyl considering an offer...it's in Kensington Heights/North Kensington which we are only somewhat familiar with...anyone live in that area? Where do you go for restaurants/shopping/etc.? Any thoughts on the community/neighborhood itself? I checked out the Kenmont pool which looks awesome but of course has a waiting list
Re: Kensington heights?
I don't live there, but I live just a mile or so north in Wheaton. I like Kensington a lot, and if we could have found a comparable house that we could afford, we would have bought there.
We don't go out very much anymore since the baby, but when we do, it's in Silver Spring and Bethesda (you'd be a little closer to Bethesda than we are). Our go-to takeout places are in Wheaton and Four Corners, mostly. I do my shopping at Wheaton Plaza. I grocery shop at Giant in Wheaton, Safeway in Kensington (it's on my commute home), Whole Foods in Silver Spring and Trader Joes in Four Corners.
I really think it's an awesome location!
We actually live in teh Wheaton area, too...so I'm trying to decide if moving just 10 minutes away is really worth it..I think for the schools, at least it is...but I'm wondering if the neighborhood itself is that different, or at least different enough to justify the price of the house!
St. John, USVI
LOL! Are you looking at one of the new construction houses? I've been meaning to stop by?
For me, I wouldn't move 10 minutes away but I love my little neighborhood - our elementary school is pretty good, and I love my house and yard.
If you like the potential new house more than your current house - buy it!
We love Kensington, and hopefully our landlords will be away forever and we can just keep renting here, there's no way we could afford to buy in our current neighborhood. lol
We make the rockin' world go 'round.
I do! If you want to PM me, I can tell you where I live - it might be near what you are looking at.
I love where we are, we've lived here for 6 years. Metro is walkable, I can get to Bethesda, Rockville or Friendship Heights/Chevy Chase in 15 minutes, we're not far from the Beltway, and 270 isn't that much further. We're close to DTSS, Rock Creek. Most of our major shopping we do at the Wheaton Mall area - Target and Giant. The actual mall isn't spectacular (though it is improving).
I will say because we are so close to the mall and metro, we get some crime. Like cars being broken into, the occassional house being broken in to. The mall has had it's own issues. It tends to happen more in the warmer months in our neighborhood. I still feel safe here, but I thought I'd be honest. It probably helps that we have a security system. Though I definitely say there are parts of Wheaton I wouldn't want to be walking around by myself at night.
ETA: The two elementary schools right by us are both excellent, and our middle school is Newport Mill, and high school is Einstein. I have no real knowledge of the quality of anything other than the elementary schools though.
One more thought - depending on where this house is, I want to make sure you're aware of the Costco they're building at Wheaton Mall. Moreso the gas station they are proposing putting in as well.... the area of which backs right up to the Kenmont pool and some homes in KH.
The gas station isn't a done deal (KH neighborhood has an active work group that is trying to fight it) but it's something to know about going in if you're close to the mall area.
