Yesterday morning was NO fun. We went for her appointment at the CHOP
office in Princeton and they were
not able to do the type of cast she needs there. So they sent us to the
main CHOP hospital in Philly. The cast is on her whole leg plus around
her waist. The fracture is high enough on her leg that a leg-only cast
wouldn't go high enough to help it heal, plus she could probably wiggle
out of it anyway if it was only on her leg. We go back on March 28. They will almost definitely be taking it off then, but will do an
x-ray just to be sure that it is totally healed before removing it. CHOP
is so fantastic...the orthopedist in Princeton called her partner in
Philly so he would be expecting us. We literally walked in the building,
where an escort was waiting for us. She hopped us to the front of the
registration line and the orthopedist was waiting for us in the cast
room when we got there. I felt like we got the royal treatment. We were
in and out in under an hour.
Unfortunately, poor Julia cannot
even sit up, although she did figure out how to roll over. She is relegated to being held, laying on
the floor, or sitting in the bouncy seat (which she doesn't really like
anymore anyway, but she at least has to eat there since she can't sit in
the booster seat). Pants won't fit
over her cast, and onesies won't fit over the huge crotch part of the cast, so dressing her will be a challenge. Diapering is interesting too. I have to use either a maxi
pad or a newborn diaper against her skin, and then put a size 4 over
the entire cast to hold it on. I'm sure there will be lots of leaks, but it's the best we can
do. I washed her hair in the kitchen sink last night and will just use baby wipes to clean her body. Fortunately, she is sleeping normally at night and for naps.
And of course, as if she hadn't been through enough over the last few days, she woke up this morning all congested and snotty. I actually had to cut some dried boogers out of her hair, lol.
I know accidents happen and I should not beat myself up about this, but I feel like the biggest asshat ever for causing this. This is gonna be a looooong 4 weeks At least she is still happy!
Re: F/U to falling down the stairs (kinda long)
Aww! well i'm glad the experience was easy and that she looks happy! i hope it's healed up by your next appt!
can you get Baby Legs or leg warmers? Target sells them. I would just do play-style dresses and a babyleg on her bare leg.
Yeah, I have a couple pairs of leg warmers, and some long sleeved shirts. She will look ghetto-fab with her huge diaper hanging out, but who cares. Whenever we're out of the house she'll be strapped in the infant seat and covered with a blanket anyway, so no one will really notice.
Such a cute picture!
It's easy to beat yourself up, but think of how much worse it could have been if you hadn't protected her head, or if you hadn't held on to her. You instinctively did the best thing you could have in the situation. She seems pretty happy! )
You can buy onesie extenders. I believe BRU has them. They add some length to the crotch section. You can order online here too.
Try not to beat yourself up. Accidents happen.
My son's friend recently tripped (literally that's all that happened) and broke his leg so badly he needed a cast like this for a long time. He got the thing off in November and returned to school. Even from that first day back you'd never guess he'd ever had anything happen. At M's b-day he was bouncy around just as much (if not more) than all the other kids.
If you can think of any baby items that would help you, let me know. I think we live close and I'm willing to loan you anything I'm not using anymore.
Hugs momma! At the very least, she still looks happy and unbothered!
Dh wouldn't let me get more than one photo of Ava's cast. He did not want the visual reminder. I'll never forget when she saw that picture last year and asked what it was- what a story to explain!
Aw, good luck for the next month! Love that she's still smiling! Hope the time goes by quickly.
Became a Mrs. on 4/29/06 and a Mommy on 12/5/08
aww dont beat yourself up! accidents happen. she looks super happy and you know what? she will NEVER remember this!
i know you feel awful- i feel awful when im not paying attention and santino just bumps his head on a cabinet. i could imagine how you feel. but you are doing the best you can as a parent, we all do. these 4 weeks will fly by and when shes older youll be telling her about her big cast crotch and laughing about it.
you could always put her in tunic tops and long sweaters for now. eh- as long as shes warm and clean, who cares right?
i wonder if cloth diapers with inserts would be less leaky?
OMG she is soo cute. I hope the month flies for you guys!
Aw, she looks like such a happy little girl and, just an aside, your sig pic is adorable!!
I'm sorry...I can only imagine how bad you feel, but, you'll both get through the next month!!
