Am I the only mom that does this?

I'm always second guessing myself about when to take E to the doctor. I just hate when I go and they said "it's a cold, give her plenty fluids", so I put it off until I think she's bad enough to warrant it.

She's had a little cough, which has turned into a yuckier sounding cough so I decided to take her this afternoon. Another reason is that nestie that told me her child's cold turned into bronchitis. No fever since Sunday though - just a very low-grade one last night.

Re: Am I the only mom that does this?

  • i think all moms have a ahrd time deciding when to take them to the doc... you hate to waste time/money going if it's just a cold- but you worry it's something worse and you're waiting and it will get worse...

I also hate taking them in b/c i know they'll pick up MORE germs- so I avoid going if I can...

for a cough - unless it sounds like it's getting into the chest, or if it's keeping them up at night- I don't bring them in.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I have taken my kids like 4 times this fall/winter and every time it was nothing. But I worry and I could have taken them more, but I try to wait it out. I know they cant do anything for a cough, so if they have a fever I take them but without it I know they will just say the same things I already know. Basically now if they have a fever and one other symptom and after 2-3 days it gets worse I take them, if not I ride it out
  • you're a mom, you're always going to worry you're either doing too much or not enough...its a fact of life. if i think she needs to see the dr, i find if i call and ask to speak with the nurse they are always more than happy tp help me determine whether a visit is warranted...i should say if i am in a quandry about whether she should see the dr...
  • No, you so aren't the only one....my son has been to the dr for sick visits twice this school t year. The first I swore he was sick and it was a little cold. The second he had just a scratchy throat and raspy voice, he actually said he felt ok, but I had a bad feeling and took him anyway....throat and ear infection!

My doctor says that we aren't wasting her time bringing anyone in for "just a cold" and not too feel bad....bc you never know when it is more than a cold!

Hope your little one feels better!!

  • I hardly ever take him. One, because I despise the other two docs besides Rosen and two, because I don't need to pay $30 copay for them to tell me it's a cold and there's really nothing to do. I take him when he has a really high fever or something seems really off.
  • I hardly take DS to the doctor also.  I do 2nd guess myself about it all the time though.  Just about every time, it's a "virus that should clear up in 7-10 days" so it's just a waste of my money.  I'll go for a high fever that doesn't break with medicine, if he's been sick for awhile or if he has symptoms he hasn't had before.

I hear ya...we're seeing the worst one today. I'm just worried that her cough has gotten into her chest and she's not great at coughing up and spitting out the mucous when she coughs.
