I am dying for spring and summer to come when we can grill, so I have been think about my favorite thing to have on the grill-Filet Mignon! We don't have it very often, maybe once or twice a summer because it is pricey and we never order it when we go out to eat since it is so expensive. I would like to treat DH and I to some fancy dinners this grilling season, but I am not sure the best place to get good quality Filet Mignon. I live in a small, rural town. Our grocery store carries it, but I we haven't been thrilled with the quality. We have a local butcher in town that I could try. I am trying to remember what they charge per pound, I want to say somewhere between $12-15. I have heard if Omaha Steaks and Kansas City Steaks, but have never tried them. Our local Schwan's man dropped off a catalog and they have 4 USDA choice 6oz. steaks for $39.99, but I am not sure of the quality. Would I be better off going with my local butcher or a mail order steak company for price and/or quality?
Re: Best place to buy Filet Mignon?
I would go to my local butcher for this cut of meat.
Omaha Steaks are awful.
I'd hit the butcher or a higher end supermarket that has a butcher counter.
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
NO WAY do you go omaha over a local butcher. frozen over fresh? no no no
go to your butcher. filets are small and if you want to have an awesome dinner buy 2 really good pieces of steak.

BUTCHER SHOP! They'll help you find the best cut, size and everything. DH prefers them wrapped in bacon when grilling, since it's such a lean cut of meat. He'll snakc on the bacon, but it's just for cooking.
It might be a little more per pound than crappy grocery store, but worth it. It's a great quality fresh meat. Not fatty, that goes to waste. Plus with a filet, you only need 4-6 oz per person, so we usually spend about $20 for the 2 of us and i usually can't finish mine, so makes for a nice breakfast the next morning!
We are very mm in our groceries- eat cheap chicken, some sale ground beef, etc. But when we want something like a steak, we go all out!
This is us too. We usually eat pretty cheap, but every now and then it is nice to splurge.
