I'm full of questions today

We just switched over to Wellness Puppy food.  Their guideline says to give 3 cups a day, but that seems like a lot with all the treats we give him. Should we be adjusting how much food with give because of all the treats we give him.  If yes, by how much?

FYI - We live on the 10th floor.  I have a feeling he gets more treats than the normally dog because we reward him for being good in the elevators and for potty training. But maybe not?

Re: I'm full of questions today

  • If you think he's getting too much food with all the treats, just set aside some of the total food you feed him per day and give him pieces of the kibble in place of the treats.

This. We did this with Bella while training and now when she gets a treatball we fill it with kibble and she is none the wiser :)

  • The elevator *is* hard.  Good luck!

Most dog food bags also give higher estimates than normal, you could probably cut back based on that fact alone.  If he starts to look chunky (you run you hand along his side and you can't feel ribs), then I'd definitely cut back.

I'd also break the treats into the tiniest treats you can make him work for.  Gloria will work for one forth of a Zuke's mini Natural treat (they are about the size of the bottom 1/4th inch of a BIC pin, and I'm talking about 1/4 of that), so if you're giving entire treats for doing one thing, you might consider switching to a low calorie treat (carrots work for some of the ladies) or getting soft treats that you can break into really tiny pieces.

  • Actually, he is really good with the elevator.  Only once did he pee in the elevator and that was when he was about 10 weeks.   He does a pretty good job of sitting, not getting off at the wrong floor or bugging other people.  He is funny. He will sit on his own and just look at us directly in the eye with a "I sat down, where is my treat?" look. (we don't give it to him until we are ready to get off)

I already cut the treats in half (or more depending on the size).  I'm glad to hear I'm on the right track on that.

  • I'm glad he's good!  We fortunately have the option of taking the stairs, but sometimes we take the elevator.

One time when we got in while a girl was already on it.  She saw 26 pound G, who was actually being good and sitting quietly for once, and started having a panic attack in the opposite corner of the elevator.  Yup, that's exactly what you do when you're scared of dogs and one gets on the elevator. :S

    Aw, poor girl.

One of our doormen is scared of dogs.  Chef D as a routine that he gets of the elevator and goes to say hello to the doormen.  I'm good at steering him away when C is working (he only works 1-2 nights a week)

Chef D thinks EVERYONE wants to pet him and gets almost mad I'm steering him away from an potential pet.   C will 'try' and pet him from time to time, but it's clear he is not comfortable. He appreciates me trying to keep him away.  There are a ton of dogs in the buliding, I'm not sure how he does it working there.

Nera is the same way.  She gets this really upset look on her face if someone doesn't pet her and just walks past.

    She's such an AW.

  • Haha, Gloria too.  If she's got a lot of pent up energy (e.g. the first walk after we get home from work), she'll bark at the folks who don't stop to pet her.  I keep telling her that she sounds mean and they'll never want to pet her if she keeps that up, but she doesn't seem to understand my logic, she only understands treats.

  • We live a block from the French Quarter.  Chef D's has figured out that the best spot to be pet is to hang out with the doormen/valets of the major hotels like the Ritz or Royal Sonesta.  He will actually run as he sees the guys and then he  just sit his butt down on their carpet.

He doesn't bark if they ignore him, but he gets such a pathetic look on his wriggled face.
