Has anyone had staples removed from their pet before?
My dog had emergency surgery on Sunday because he swallowed a latex glove and it got stuck in his intestine. He has a pretty large incision that was closed with 34 staples. I have to bring him to my regular vet in 10-14 days to have them removed and I am just wondering how painful it is going to be for my dog. I am wondering if I should save one of his pain killers from the surgery to give him when we get the staples removed. Thanks

Staples and sutures are different to remove and cause different levels of pain. Sutures are basically painless. Your pet will feel them but they are not bad. Staples are a little more painful but overall are not bad. Most pets are used to them being there by the time they come out and are glad to have them removed. If you are worried at all I'd look into a light sedative but wouldn't worry too much about it.
I've removed staples before from small rodents up to 200 lb dogs and they just about all give the same effect: they flinch a bit when you are physically removing them but then they are fine and happy to have them out.
This.
Mine took out all but one of her own.
The last one, she did not seem to notice the removal.
GL!
Oh my goodness! You poor thing! Im so glad he's ok!
Coopers had both sutures & staples. The suture was a running stitch, so it took like 2 seconds to take out, whereas there were about 31 staples, which took forever.
My thoughts are this:
*The end part doesn't apply to us, our Vet has done both in front of me, & for the staples, I had to hold him down in this crazy position so they could get the staples out (b/c it would take so long, & b/c there's no way a dog will just lay there voluntarily for that long, lol). He wasn't thrilled w/it, but it actually worked! I was shocked! &, it gave me something to do/focus on to keep me calm during the whole thing...which totally makes a difference in how the visit goes!
& this:
Levels of pain can also differ on where the incision is (a belly which has a lot of skin, fat, etc.. *should* be less painful, as opposed to an extremity, where there is no "meat" for cushioning, if that makes sense?) & how serious the surgery was that was done.
We recommend to our (human) post-op patients that they take a pain pill before they come in to get their stitches out. But, as humans we work ourselves up over stuff like that before it happens, anticipating the worst, post painful thing. Dogs obviously do not have this problem, they just go w/the flow.
I'd say, just stay calm (they feed off you ya know, so if youre stressed/nervous /scared, he will be too) &, there's nothing wrong w/asking to have him taken in the back to get the staples removed!! Sometimes its best for all parties involved if you just separate yourself from them/they from you during that time.
HTH & GL!!
