S/O trampolines, does anyone have one in their yard?

I never realized they had to be listed on insurance. A few neighbors have them and Drew loves them. One neighbors kids are "too cool" for it now and she offered it to me. Now I am torn whether to take it.

  • Not sure why, but they scare the bejeezus out of me. My kids want one, but I don't have the room for it in the backyard now.

And I had no idea that it needed to be listed on insurance.........

  • I saw this story this past summer and we will never get one, and my kids arent allowed on them either. We are also strict with the usage of our bouncy house especially when other kids come over and use it.

  • My son loves it and I was thinking of getting one for his birthday for our yard.  I never realized about the insurance stuff.  Needless to say, it is now off my list.
  • yup! They have to be listed on your homeowners.

I have a small little job at a law firm that handles lots of insurance stuff and lots of homeowners cases come in about trampolines. On one of them neighborhood kids came and used it when the homeowner wasn't home and then get hurt. Also if there is a big wind storm they can blow over- they should be properly anchored.

Apart from the insurance issue, they scare me too.

  • My parents got one for my sister and me back when I was in 5th or 6th grade (it's so long ago... I wonder if that's when they first came out).  Anyway, a few months after getting it my best friend and I were jumping and she fell off and broke her arm.  That was before the safety nets came out and, luckily, her parents never sued us but I know my parents were really nervous at the time about it happening.

I loved having one as a kid and I'm all about allowing kids to get the occasional bumps and bruises (not on purpose, of course), but because of how litigious everyone is these days my husband and I definitely won't be getting one when we have kids.

People think I'm nuts, but honestly, this is why we don't have and won't be getting a swing/playset. I'm scared of other kids using it and getting hurt. The kids in my neighborhood are always playing on their friends/ neighbors ones and my neighbors have told us we are welcome to use theirs any time.

But it scares me to have one and I don't want to put a fence up to keep others off it.  Totally non-related to insurance, I don't like how permanent they are.

That's the main reason I don't want a pool when we buy a house even though it's all my husband talks about.  We had a big inground swimming pool when I was younger and my dad has always told me that he could never enjoy all the  parties we'd have at our house in the summer because he was always watching everyone else's kids like a hawk.  I can remember floating around with my swimmies when I was much younger and being pulled under on multiple occasions because older kids (and even grown-ass men) would jump into our pool, suddenly remember they couldn't swim, and then grab onto the nearest thing they could find (me) and pull me under.  No matter how many times my dad would plead with our friends and family to be honest about whether or not they could swim before going into our pool, people just didn't seem to care and they'd jump in anyway.  I don't want to deal with that by having a pool of my own because I'd be a constant nervous wreck.

I'm totally with you on that one. We have neighbors who have friends come over and use their pool when they are away- I think thats crazy- but to each their own. Also, and I know its rare, but every summer you hear that one story about a kid who climbed a neighbors fence and drowned in their pool when they weren't home. Even if the neighbor did everything right- locking the fence, fence at the right height, etc- they are still screwed!

Personally, I also don't think a pool is worth it (cost to maintain, chemicals, increased insurance, etc) for the small window of time we have here in NJ to use it.

If I lived in TX or Florida- yea, I might have one since having a pool is as common as having a dishwasher!

We have a great, huge, town pool that is VERY reasonable to join. I love going there for the pool and the socialization for both my son and me. Its THE place to be in the summer months.
