When did you start solids with your baby?

With L I think we tried at 4.5 months and she wasn't interested so we waited till 5.5 months and she was into it.  With A I feel like she is drinking a lot of ounces and still waking once or  twice at night to eat and draining the bottles.  I know that cereal supposedly doesn't help with sleeping but I wonder if it will help with her hunger.  She is a bit bigger than L was at this age.  I am not sure if she is interested in eating, she isn't showing signs.  What did everyone else do and what were the reasons?  .

With DD1 I started between 5 and 6 months, and with DD2 I started around 4 months with bananas and cereal. She just seemed to have such a great appetite. She was also a "happy spitter", and her doctor suggested that starting her on food might help settle her down a little bit. It worked!

A is a happy spitter too.  I was going to switch her formula because of it but I'm thinking food may help.

I know, that sucks.  I remember being sad about this with L because she was so cranky when she got home that I had to send it to daycare for them to give it to her and I wanted to be a part of it.  But it's almost the weekend so you will get to do it then!  For now, she is wide awake and happy when she comes home since she had been taking a long late nap at daycare.  doesn't help with the night sleeping but at least I get to spend time with her, you just can't win lol!

I did no solids at all until 6 mo. If he was hungry I BF'd and gave formula.

I did no solids at all until 6 mo.

Ditto. Even at 6 months we still never gave cereal.

  • I started Abby at 4 months, she was interested.  We tried again at 6 months, she still wasn't interested.  She didn't really get interested till she was about 9 months old.

Why no cereal? Your the second person I heard say that this week but I wasn't sure why people would skip that. Not being judgy, I had just never heard of people skipping cereal and now I'm wondering if I missed something! L isn't ready for solids yet but I'm a researcher lol.

  • She is still very little, getting up once or twice a night to eat seems perfectly reasonable. We started solids with both girls at 6 months.

  • Corey was 6 weeks, Travis was 7 weeks.  They both took to it.

curious about this too.  It seems like there is a correlation with allergies?  We did cereal the old school way with my first and didn't have any problems but I'm always curious on this stuff.

  • Olivia started cereals at 2 months...she has a small stomach and wasn't really napping...you would feed her burp her put her down and 10 minutes later she was hungry again...so her pediatrician recommended doing cereal for breakfast and again for dinner. That definitely helped.

At 3 months we started fruits since she had really bad gas even with mylicon  3 times a day...so the pediatrician told me to feed her peaches at lunch since it was a natural gas reliever. Not sure if it is or not...but it definitely helped since the nightly gas pain screams stopped.

At 4 months we started veggies since she was doing well with the fruits. I really didn't start meats, etc until way later since she didn't seem too interested in them and she was thriving with just veggies & fruits (and formula of course). Every kid is different.

  • I started Julia around 5 months and she took to it immediately. I started offering Emma around 5 months and she had no interest. I offered food every week or so for a good 2 months before she finally ate. She hated the texture of purees of any form (rice cereal, fruits, vegetables, yogurt, etc), so she ended up starting with tiny pieces of table food once she was able to handle them.

this was santino too. i tried at least a few times a week from when he was about 4.5 months old and then finally at about 6 months old, he was finally digging the oatmeal.

if you feel like she is hungry and it could help, go for it. she might surprise you!

  • Her doctor said to start at 6 months, but she hated everything we gave her.  She finally ate yogurt at 9 months.

  • We started both girls at 5 months & both with avocado as their first food not cereal. I believe most people who skip cereal do so because it doesn't have much nutritional value.

I was trying really hard with BF, I read kellymom.com and it gave tons of reasons not to start solids til 6 months that made sense to me. http://www.kellymom.com/

And I just never understood the rush. I don't know- I assumed babies eat every 3 hours or so- I want to eat every 3 hours. I wasn't surprised by this or trying to change it. Since i was also told by the ped that "under one it's just for fun" and they're not really getting their nutrients from food, I didn't see the point of trying to get him to eat food. That was just one more thing to do that didn't seem necessary. I wasn't in a hurry for him to eat, crawl, walk, etc.

And he did eat cereal. Not rice- oatmeal. He didn't like rice. I don't know why someone wouldn't give cereal or oatmeal.
  • I wanted to wait til 6 mo with my first, but in the hopes that solids would help her reflux I started cereal at 5 mo, veggies at six mo.  Planning on waiting til 6 mo with this one.

  • to answer your no cereal question, a lot of people skip it because it really has no nutritional value (although my ped will say it has iron and they need iron.. whatever). there are better foods you can give as a first food, like sweet potato or avocado or applesauce. depends on what your baby likes and what your baby can handle. we tried avocado and he choked on it and i didnt give it to him again until a couple weeks ago (he will be one on monday).

santino never liked rice, and the couple of times we snuck it in there he got horribly constipated. he did much better with oatmeal and barley. we never gave him a lot of cereal- maybe 2-3 tablespoons a day at the MOST, and that was after a few months even just to thicken up fruits and yogurt. we worked up to it from about a tablespoon a day in the beginning.

  • 4.5 months.

We had planned on waiting till 6 months, but he got a virus & had bad diarrhea & lost a significant amount of weight, so the pedi had use start rice cereal mixed w/ BM & banana puree.

  • I started Teagan at 4.5 months. The ped recommended it b/c her weight gain from 2 to 4 months wasn't as much as she would have liked to see. She took to it right away. Teagan was already STTN at that point. Cora isn't and I'm tempted to start solids, but she has been packing on the pounds just fine with just bfing so I'm going to wait.  I'm sure I'll start by the end of march before I go back to work since I plan to start playing with my beaba babycook soon.
