I know an affectionate kitten sounds great but she's driving me nuts!!
Brought home a 3 month old kitten from a local shelter yesterday afternoon and she is so sweet and lovable but literally climbs on my head!! As I try type this she keeps stepping on the screen and rubbing herself against my hand... Or sits on my chest making it impossible to see the screen. ( it's taking me ages to type this with all the editing!!)
What can I do???? Try tap her onthenose, try push her away gently or distract her but she just comes back every time. She is persistent and just wants love!! Any idea's?
The other problem is that my 'original' cat Isn't crazy about the new addition and won't come near her, and with the new one being so clingy its virtually impossible for me to give my other cat any attention... I'm feeling terrible! Help!
Re: Super lovable kitten - help!
Give her at least a week without doing anything besides pushing her away a bit. She's just come out of a super stressful environment and just wants loving. She may get better after she realizes she's "home"
After that... Squirt bottle. "NO" Squirt. and don't be afraid to lock her out of your room at night.
There is a section in the FAQ's at the top of the page about introducting two cats, but it can take over a month of them to get used to each other, so don't fret about it yet!
5 cats. 1 baby.
I'm in the middle of getting two kitties acclimated to each other and our new guy, Gus, is still a bit of a spaz. I've been keeping the two cats separated with the exception of highly supervised interactions that I've been loosening up over the last few days. Your older cat will come around. The kitten - well, they tend to have TONS of energy, and the PP is right, she's probably just so happy to be home that she's acting it out by crawling all over you (Gus has been trying to eat my hair and attack my laptop - or walk straight across the keyboard). She'll calm down, but it may also be good to have toys that will keep her occupied, such as things stuffed with catnip, feather-y/bouncy toys, etc. You can find tons of cat toys that they will essentially play with themselves - your very playful kitten will appreciate it, as will your productivity.
If bad behavior continues after she's adjusted to her new environment, then the spray bottle or some other type of discipline should help teach her what is and isn't desirable behavior.
Good luck and congrats on the newest member of your family!
