Why in the world can I not get an interview??? What's wrong with me? My resume? My reputation? My employment history?
I hear about other people applying for jobs and getting a chance to interview all the dammm time and yet, can I get in ANYWHERE for an interview???!!! No! Why?
I decided to try to go back to social work for the developmentally disabled population. It's a job I was good at and felt some sense of fulfillment in so I figured, why not? The pay is not great but it's a job that I'm really good at and the benefits are great. Plus, I know people in the field, even the MANAGER for the position at the local CCB (agency that does social work for the DD population). I called him on Monday and told him I was pregnant (again) and was interested in the job and asked if I'd be wasting his/my time to apply. He said 'NO WAY' and encouraged me to apply that very same day because interviews were Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
I don't hear back...
I e-mailed him today, asking if all my paperwork was submitted alright since I hadn't heard and he said that "due to the applications received" I was not being considered for the position at this time. Seriously??? I e-mailed him back asking what they had that I was lacking but haven't heard back yet.
I just don't understand. I'm really good at this job. I'm really good at ANY job, pretty much, and NO ONE will give me a chance!!!
Sorry for the vent. I'm getting tired of this... it's been over a year for goodness' sake!
Re: I'm a great employee so...
((hugs))
I'm sorry
Hugs, I am sorry.
I would put in a phone call to him and ask him "in person". Say that you are always looking to improve your application, etc. and if he had any items he thinks you could improve on. then it's not about him and not considering you but about how you are trying to improve yourself.
This doesn't always work, and people love to avoid those who didn't get chosen (we do this on projects we go after as a company here), but if you can surprise him a bit, or leave a message and follow up again, he might have time to collect his thoughts and be really helpful.
my read shelf:
If I get one more form letter about being "able to select a candidate whose skills identically matched the job," I am going to punch my computer in the face, then throw it out the window, fill my tub with equal parts Jim Beam and Liquid Cheese, climb in, let my head slip under, and stay there forever.
MY SKILLS IDENTICALLY MATCH THE JOB or frankly, I don't even bother applying any more.
COME ON!
BTW - sometimes the "not being considered due to the applications received" thing comes down to the amount they get - after they get in enough qualified candidates to gather a good potential pool - they stop looking at additional applications.
It sucks that they don't take the posting down, but it is the way things seem to always go around here.

Are you on unemployment? Maybe you could take one of those resume classes or have an "expert" review it? Also, if you're not already doing this, you should be tailoring your resume for the job you're applying for. For example, if you want a job in social work, highlight your social work experience as the primary section of your resume followed by your job history so they have your chronological history, too. I've also heard the longer you are unemployed these days, the harder it is because employers want to see you working somewhere even if it's the grocery store or Starbucks. Hopefully, you're adding your subbing in your history as well.
Anyway, this is just my brain running trying to figure out ideas for you so please ignore if you've already done all of this
just playing devil's advocate - but next time - don't tell them you're pregnant.
sorry you didn't even get an interview!
I was just going to say this exactly. I know it's not nice. And I know it's not exactly legal, but I wouldn't want to hire someone who's pregnant. Just like I wouldn't want to hire someone who was planning a wedding (going on a long vacation soon...mught be distracted at work).
I don't have my current employment on my resume at all. I do taylor depending on the job I'm applying for but I haven't added subbing or working at the mall. I'll do that right away...
I haven't mentioned it to anyone else (mostly because I haven't been interviewed anywhere... at all...). The reason I did this time is because I know these people from working with them in years past. I asked up front if I'd be wasting their time by interviewing, showing up with a huge belly, knowing they wouldn't be cool hiring me, having me work (I'd need NO training, I've literally done this job word for word with two other agencies before) for 2 months, and then taking 2 months off. I thought laying it all out there before even submitting an application was the right thing to do here instead of just showing up for an interview, belly in tow, looking as though I was trying to get away with something... no? Did I totally handle it wrong?? When I talked to the manager, he said they have lots of new moms on staff right now and didn't think it would be a problem and that he was looking forward to seeing me.
FTR: He replied to my e-mail saying that he had nothing to do with the screening process and wasn't given the opportunity to look at ANY of the applications so he has no idea. I got the impression that he was going to supervise the position after the other people had chosen the person for the job... boo... He was very sincere and compassionate, saying that he wants me to keep applying and would love to work with me again... that doesn't really help me right now though : (
