Newbie question about PCSing
Hi, I know I'm new, and I'm sorry if this gets asked a lot, but I'm lost. We just got an assignment to PCS, and I'm wondering if there is some checklist I can look into. I'm already writing down everything we need to do in the next 8 months(if the orders stick, and don't get canceled). I feel like I'm gonna forget something important etc. I would really appreciate any advice, thank y'all so much!
Re: Newbie question about PCSing
Are you going to move yourselves or have the military move you? If you're moving yourself then I'm probably no help because the only suggestion I have is to start collecting boxes and start packing now.
If the military is moving you then you really don't have to do much of anything. When it gets closer you guys will have to set up your move either online or at a PPO.
Some things to consider are if you're going to rent or buy, on base or off, and what you would like to live in (house, townhouse, apartment, etc.). If you're planning on living on base find out if there is a wait list, and if so get your name on it. If not, I wouldn't start looking for housing for at least a few months since things change so much. Also decide if you're going to use house hunting leave to go check out the area or just go stay in a hotel and look for something when you get there.
If you are in school I would look into what it will take to transfer.
If you hold any professional certificates by your current state, I would look into what standard your new state has and about getting it transferred.
If you work I would start job hunting now. I started a full 6 months before we PCS'd and didn't find anything until we had been here for 6 months.
I changed my name
