A couple nights ago, DH said it sounded like Cocoa was going to throw up. By time I was listening he stopped. Well tonight he's been making coughing/gagging sounds along with the movement like he's going to throw up but doesn't. It almost seems like he has a "tickle" in his throat or something small is caught. He is breathing just fine and acting normal. Anything I can do to help him? He's not constantly doing it...TIA
Re: Coughing/gagging?
Miko's kennel cough started out the exact same way. I gave him Robitussin when it got worse and that really helped with the coughing. He gagged for a few days first, though.
I hope Cocoa isn't sick!
Yep.this is exactly what Napoleon had when he was coming down with kennel cough. You can give the Robitussin or honey. I have used both and it helped his cough. I also bought a humidifer and had him lay by it. It helped but it took forever for it to go away.
Keep an eye out if for pneumonia, but if it is as simple as kennel cough it will just run it's course.
I'm worried though that if it is kennel cough that my older dog will get it. He's never vaccinated for bordetella and the new dogs have been home for a week. Isn't there an antibiotic that they give for it?
I tried to reply yesterday but TN was not cooperating. It also sounds like kennel cough to me. Kennel cough is a term to describe the symptoms, not necessarily what is causing it, It can be bacterial or viral and antibiotics only work for the bacterial kind. I got a new dog w/ kennel cough but I always vaccinate my older dog w/ the intranasal bordetella and she didnt get sick. Hopefully your older dog doesnt catch it, kinda late now.
One thing that really seemed to help our coughing boy was to bring him in the bathroom while showering and let it get all nice and steamy. The humidity seemed to calm the coughing. Good luck!
