good foods for gallbladder sx

My MIL had emergency gallbladder sx yesterday. I wanted to pick up some prepared foods for her and my FIL, who does no cooking. Any thoughts on what to get them that wouldn't be too hard on her stomach, but filling enough that they don't have to cook it themselves?

Re: good foods for gallbladder sx

  • Low-fat and mild are your best bets. Stick with something lean proteins (chicken, turkey) and maybe a pasta or rice dish...fruits/veggies should be fine.

HIGH fiber!!  With anesthetic and pain meds, she may need a little help.  After the first day or so, bland, lean foods aren't that important like they would be for someone having gall bladder attacks.
  • I had mine out last week (23rd).  I am still trying to recover--physically and food wise.  The first three days I had nothing but water, ginger ale, Naked Juice Smoothies, saltines, and plain applesauce.  I progressed to plain noodles, eggs, and bread the fourth day.  LOW FAT is essential.  I had 1 tbsp of peanut butter and it sent my digestive system into a fit.  The nausea and pain is gone, but the "other" is still around.  I can't even think about meat (although I hadn't been able to eat any before I had mine out).  And yes...pain meds will cause constipation, so high fiber or a laxative.  I would take your FIL a pot of soup that's low fat, that way he can eat on it.  Once she's feeling a little better, she can puree some and have it--that was my first "solid" food. It's a pain and the rear and she should expect her body to take awhile to regulate.  Also, for her info...a lot of people compain about pain from the air they blow the abdomen up with (my doc sucked it out, so I had no issues); she needs to move around/walk to get the body to absorb it.  Taking a gas medicine pill also helps.  Hope she feels better!
