Can I take excedrin and sudafed at the same time?

I'm terrified of mixing drugs.

I had a migraine this morning and had to take excedrin.... Problem is I have a cold and congestion, so I can't take my cold meds on top of that because they both contain ibprophen. But I can't breathe now due to the congestion. I'm about to go buy some sudafed, but I don't want to leave work to go get it only to find out I can't take it.

I use this all the time - I used to have to check my Mom's cancer drugs against everything.

You could also call CVS/pharmacy and ask a pharmacist - they're always happy to help.

That is an awesome website! Thanks!

Looks like it would be okay... But I will check with the pharmicist too.

  • Sudafed has no pain reliever in it... so yes, you can mix it with excedrin.

Also, excedrin has no ibuprofen in it... it's basically acetametophine (Tylenol), asprin and caffeine... none of which conflcit with ibuprofen, which is an anti-inflammatory. Dont take Excedrin with anything that already has tylenol or asprin in it (i.e. Theraflu) but it wont conflict with anything that just has ibuprofen in it.

Never take two drugs that have ibuprofen in it and dont take Tylenol with things like Theraflu which already have Tylenol in it, but you can take Sudafed with either Excedrin or Ibuprofen and you'd be fine.

Mom's a nurse... grew up learning WAAAY more than I ever wanted to about medicine.

  • I'm so jealous you can get sudafed. They have made it prescription only in Oregon because of meth use. sigh.

    Same for KY.

ETA: It's not Rx only, but it's not available beside the Tylenol and Advil. You have to go to the pharmacy counter and ask for t, showing ID and all.

You can't even get it that way here, I wish we could. Script only. So frustrating. I haven't had it in years because it's usually not worth the hassle.

Lol... Yes acetametophine. I knew ibuprofen wasn't right. Both the excedrin and the cold medince have that in it.

  • Yeah a lotta cold meds have acetametaphine but straight up Sudafed doesnt... I never took pharmacology but was in high school when my mom went to school to be a nurse... Helprd tutor her a lot.. She was the first one who told me I should be a teacher bc of that. :)

In Cali you can get Sudafed with Id... It would suck having to get a script... Its the only thing that works with my sinus infection... Brit and I are in the same boat this wknd.

Lol we could send you a care package with some it it for you.

We have to get it from the pharmacy now too, with an ID but doesn't need to be rx. A few weeks ago I had a really bad cold, hubby went to buy me something that had sudafed in it and beer for himself ( we have ONE store in Colorado that you can buy beer in that's not a liquor store) and the system REFUSED to let the clerk check him out!!!!! They had to call a manager to find out why. They ended up having the run 2 transactions.....absolutely ridiculous.
