Please educate me on Protein Shakes

I have been trying to lose some weight and so far have been doing cardio, I have not really incorporated weights into my workout yet, but I will be. After my cardio workout I am so hungry and would like to grab a quick protein shake but Im not sure what kind I should drink or even if I should be drinking it, I'm afraid that I will gain weight as opposed to losing it.  I am completely uneducated about protein shakes so any help would be great. Thanks

Re: Please educate me on Protein Shakes

  • The best thing is to make your own protein shake at home as I have noticed that the ones that you purchase are often high in calories.  I have an inexpensive but great blender that is perfect for a single serving.  I typically add Almond Milk, bananas, strawberries, protein powder (I use brown rice protein powder or whey) and flaxseed oil.  Sometimes I also add almond butter and spinach (you can't taste the spinach but benefit from the nutrients).  I always experiment with different fruits.  Trader Joe's has a great selection of frozen fruits and they are very affordable there.

    Hope this helps.

  • You don't necessarily need to have a protein shake after a workout. They can be a couple hundred calories. The protein mix I use (dymatize iso 1000) is 100 calories a serving, not including whatever I mix it in. It suits my needs since I'm trying to maintain my weight while on a very restricted diet prescribed by my doctor. Normally I would just have FF milk or almond milk and some fruit.
