WWYD?

I have been working with a trainer for the past month and a half. While I had not lost any weight I did begin to feel stronger and more toned. Well, last week I was not able to train because of scheduling conflicts so I was extra careful with my diet. Low and behold I lose a couple pounds! My last training session is Monday and I am wondering if I should rejoin for another 6 sessions or just concentrate more on the diet and put that $100 towards DH's Christmas gift. I am also in the process of completing my student teaching portfolio so I could really use that time working instead of at the gym especially if a change in diet is going to be the key to my weight loss. While I know that there are a lot of things that come into play and that maybe the weight loss was just a coincidence I am wondering if I should rejoin or try to work on the diet...WWYD?

I will still have a gym membership until I graduate in December so I can go to the gym and workout by myself if I need to.

Re: WWYD?

  • Personally, I would stick with the trainer, b/c once I'm off the wagon, I'm off.  But that's just me.  However, it sounds like you have a lot on your plate, so you need to do what's best for you - I suppose you could try it on your own for a while and always rejoin if you feel like you're stuck!

Either way, congrats on the weight loss : )

  • I think the best thing to do is to work out and watch what you're eating.  Do whatever works best as far as working out on your own or using the trainer.  Personally, I worked out much better and consistently when I had a trainer.  Congrats on your progress!
  • If you need the extra motivation, I would stick with the trainer.  I've been working with one since August and I haven't lost alot weight either, but I also feel stronger and more toned.  I believe as long as you workout consistently and watch what you eat, then you'll lose alot of weight.  For me, I'm more motivated when I have a trainer so if you need the extra kick in the rear, then I would stick to him.
    Siggy coming soon....
  • Also, if your trainer is working to help you build muscles, your weight may not be a good number to go by b/c muscles weigh more than body fat.  Inches may give you a better guage.  I use to work out for strength and actually gained 10 lbs (hallelujah!).  Now that I don't anymore, I've lost it and miss it dearly. Anyways, a combo of diet and strength building should give a smaller difference in weight, but don't be disappointed b/c you'll notice a difference in how you look and feel.
  • I would stick with the trainer if I could. Sounds like you are erally busy these days. I rememeber when I was trying to graduate and didn't have time for anything else. That said, maybe you can workout on your own and continue to eat right until you finish shcool. If you don't see any changes or if you fall off the wagon then you can pick back up with your trainer after graduation. Good luck!

  • I personally think a change in diet is the easiest way to lose weight, whether you work out or not.  (not that being active is not important).  Just think - you can cut 300 calories out of your day, or you could eat those calories and then work out for an hour to burn them off.  I would rather just cut them out.  That works for me at least :)

But, if you're already used to the trainer it may be best to stick with him for long-term.  Good luck!  Either way, you sound like you're doing great!!

  • I'm with Alesha on this one...When I'm running everyday, I don't necessarily lose as much weight as when I'm watching what I eat.  That said, I feel MUCH better when I'm running.  I have more energy, am more toned, and my clothes fit better.  The best decision maker for you should be how your clothes fit....muscle weighs more than body fat.

At the same time, it sounds like you've got a lot on your plate right now, so go with what's best for you.

    Congrats on your progress! Smile

  • thanks for the suggestions, ladies! I turn in my portfolio on tomorrow and will see where i am at that point to help me make a decision. Since I graduate in December I won't have free access to the gym so that plays a role as well.
