I'm back with a flooring & babies question

Hi Ladies,

I've been over on The Bump for a bit since i drank the D&R water last year. We had a little girl in October.

Thinking ahead I'm wondering if anyone has experience with concrete floors and babies learning to walk. My nephew who is 11 months old was over last weekend and he's just learning to take steps on his own and he fell a lot. We were out on the lawn though. I'm wondering if we should consider another flooring option when our LO starts walking. I understand they take a lot of spills. Any advice is appreciated.

  • Do you already have concrete floors?  You can always put area rugs down or play mats in the area that LO plays in.

The sell those foam play matts prety cheap just about everywhere. THat might be an option if theres one room he plays in more. Having said that, kids who are learnign to walk fall. its a fact. Typically they are not going to fall hard enough to seriously hurt themselves, and I wouldn't worry too much about it. My nephew is just over a year old and he liked the floor of my parent kitchen (lino) to try and walk on muchhh more then the carpet.

  • Honestly, I'd do whatever flooring you like. Kids fall, sure. It isn't much different to fall on a concrete floor than hardwoods over a concrete slab. Just put down an area rug and teach them to be careful. My DS learned to walk on hard flooring. He took a couple of spills but nothing major.
  • My oldest learned to walk on porcelain tile that was throughout all the public rooms of the house, so not any softer than concrete. She did fine. It was harder on her crawling than when she learned to walk. We did have an area with the foam play tiles so she'd have something soft to sit on while playing, but that was more important for when she was learning to sit and kept falling over.

  • Thanks everyone! I'll try to stop worrying. She will be crawling any day now so not too long until walking.
