Interesting weather update

The weather is pretty crappy today and apparently there are tornado sightings.

The local news station is posting updates every few minutes on FB. The latest is "Possible tornado near city name. Take cover now".

1. Wouldn't the weatherman know for sure if it there's a tornado or not?

2. If there was a tornado coming, I wouldn't be on the internet and waiting for FB to tell me to stay away from windows.

How is everyone else holding up?

Re: Interesting weather update

  • 1. That's pretty par for course. It's what they normally say.

    2. That's how some people get their weather info...I would be in a closet with my laptop. How is that any different from having a radio in there with you?

  • As far as FB updates - some people could get it on their cell phones, which is much more convenient for many people.

  • They normally don't know for sure if one is coming?weird.I didn't think about the radio thing.

Maybe people are calling and reporting them. Then it's not verified, you know?

  • Good point. A lot of people are posting pics of fallen trees and such.

  • With a tornado - by the time it is verified it's usually too damn late to give an effective warning.

Exactly. It isn't a hurricane. You can't predict one all the time because they could form at any time or stop at any time. That's why you can really only prepare if the conditions are right for one and funnel clouds are spotted.

Perhaps this isn't common info for people not in normal tornado zones. Now you know!

  • Lol we get hurricanes here, so tornadoes aren't something I have experience with.

  • I agree with the others about how it's one of those things the weather people don't know until it's been reported and takes time to spot the location, then for some it's too late if it hits the ground immediately.  That's why I hate this weather so much!

If I still have power then I keep the TV on while they give live updates as well as a battery powered radio.  If a funnel cloud is spotted then they can sometimes track the rotation and tell you which direction it's heading.  Yesterday was effing crazy because it was one after another here and in different sides of town.

Are you in the clear now?

  • I always figured tornadoes and hurricanes were similiar. Now I know they're not lol.

It wasn't too bad here. A ton of rain and wind, but nothing too scary.

  • Ohh makes sense you didn't know then!

When I moved to the Gulf Coast it was so weird to wait it out with hurricanes. I was too used to tornadoes. Now I only have to worry about blizzards, ha.
