Freezing decorated sugar cookies

This has been asked a bunch of times, but I never paid attention to the answer because I had no interest in sugar cookies until a couple weeks ago...

Have you frozen cookies after decorating with royal icing?  A few sites online say you can, but Annie's FAQ says you shouldn't.  Everyone mentions condensation being a problem.

I need them for a thing on Friday, but I have a lot of spare time this weekend and not much during the week.  I was thinking maybe I could flood them today, store them tomorrow after they dry, then do the details on Friday.

If I can't freeze them, I could probably just leave them out all week, but I tend to think fresher is better.

Re: Freezing decorated sugar cookies

  • if it's just for this coming Friday, I wouldn't freeze.  I'd flood them this weekend, let them dry completely, then wrap them really good in plastic wrap (I like the press and seal stuff), then in plastic ziptop bags.  Then do your detail work on friday like yu mentioned.

The icing keeps a lot of moisture in the cookies, I think they still taste pretty fresh by Friday.  I've eaten some I've made that have been just in a zipper bag for like a week, and they've still tasted pretty good.  I think you'll be fine.

This - the royal icing helps keep the cookie moist and fresh. Definitely don't freeze the decorated cookies!

  • Thanks!  I was sort of hoping for exactly that response.
  • I agree with PPs. I under bake mine and flood with royal icing and they last and taste great for several days.
  • Actually, come to think of it, I might as well do the detailing this weekend too.  I don't want to deal with cleaning up the royal icing mess more than once if I don't have to.
