Adopted pup today (question)

Our little girl was spayed and micro-chipped today then we picked her up at the foster home and now we're all home. She has puked twice and it's thin, slimy and yellow. Is this from the anesthesia and do I need to call the vet?

Re: Adopted pup today (question)

  • Sorry no one has responded, hopefully you haven't been too nervous about your new puppy! I just wanted to say that our newest family member had the same kind of barf twice the day she was spayed. When I called the vet he said that was fairly normal and probably because she drank too much water too fast.
  • She was spayed today and you adopted her today???!! All in one day?! Indifferent

Puking like that is not ok and shouldn't happen. I would absolutely call the vet.

Our boy cats and our dog were neutered the same day we adopted them.

  • One of my girls puked like three times the day of her spay. They told us it was possible from the anesthesia, not having any food in her stomach and drinking too much water when she came home (they told us to limit it, XH did not). I would watch her closely tonight and she should feel a lot better tomorrow. But you can call an e-vet and just ask.

  • Our dog puked several times on the day of her spay. The yellowish slime you are describing sounds like just bile because she doesnt have anything else in her stomach to puke up, ya know? I would just watch her and offer tiny bits of water spread over a long time. Poor baby, hope she feels better!
  • Our vet said whenever Pongo pukes like that that it's b/c he's hungry. And now looking back at all the times he's done it, it makes sense. We'll feed him an early dinner before we go out, and then we'll usually sleep late, and then we'll let him out and he'll throw up like that.

Like others have said though, there isn't anything in her stomach, and she can't throw anything else up, and it could be the anesthesia in this case.

The shelter I volunteer for has adopters pick up their dogs the same day they're neutered/spayed.

Ditto PPs.  Plus, the vet that spayed Georgie told us that it was very possible that she may throw up yellow stuff the next day and that it IS, in fact, common post anesthesia. OP, I hope she's feeling better!  Keep an eye on her, and maybe give her some bland white rice and boiled or canned chicken to help settle her stomach.

Bellatrix was spayed in the morning and we picked her up that afternoon.

  • She seems to be feeling much better today and hasn't puked since last night. Thanks ladies.

The humane society spayed Abby the morning that we picked her up.

  • Glad she's feeling better!  Whenever Brady has surgery (which is more often than you'd think) I feed him boiled chicken and rice.  Easy on the tummy and makes him happy.
