Weaning back into exercise?

Cooper got the all clear to resume regular activities (Party!!!)!

Last night he had a friend over (lol) & they both were in 7th heaven b/c they missed eachother so much! We've still been walking him out on a leash to go potty, but once we get out there, we let him go so he can wander (as opposed to just opening the door & letting him go...b/c he'll just bolt out the door & tear around the yard like a crazy person!) & DH just left & took him for a car ride to the grocery store....We're still pretty paranoid that he'll lick his incision so we're having a hard time leaving him alone like that, or leaving him alone in the house w/o his cone on...even if we're in the house & we walk away for a minute.

Anyway we've been taking our "regular" walks twice a day since the 2nd day he was home, so he has been getting exercise this whole time. In the meantime I've been training for a race & am up to running about 5 miles now (again, Party!!!), usually Coop comes w/me, but he obviously hasn't in about a month.

DH & I were thinking we'd get him back into running w/us, but start w/like, 1 mile runs? Anyone have any experiences/recommendations on how to wean back into exercise? We don't want to go right out & go ballz to the walls & take him for a 5 mile run obviously! TIA!

Re: Weaning back into exercise?

  • ETA to myself Lol

Right before we (Coop & I) left for our run I let him outside to go potty, he was walking around, & then 2 seconds later I watch him go tearing around the yard running & playing around like a hyper idiot! So, needless to say, that helped ease my worries!

We ran about 3 miles & he did fine. He fast-walked for about 1/2 of it, but thats normal....Im too slow for him, he did this even before the surgery, so that didn't worry me.

Just in case Im going to ice him really good tonight. He already gets Deramaxx every night, so that should help any irritation he might be having that he's not displaying. :)

  • Yay for being able to take him without much trouble! I have never taken Ziva running (or Collins for that matter). I used to like it.... then I got old. Good luck on your race!
