Loss of a Pet- What to do for the family?
My sister and her husband had to put their dog down last night. He had been sick for awhile and I know they made the best decision for him.
Any suggestions on what I can do for them? I'd love to make a meal for them, but I'll be traveling 3,000 miles away in the next few days, and I don't think I'd have time to make something...

You could also have a cool portrait of the pet made on etsy if you have a picture that the family likes. I think they have a wide range of prices.
I like all of the ideas PP's said. Whenever a friend or family loses a pet, we always send a pet sympathy card with a poem, sometimes the Rainbow Bridge poem, sometimes other ones I find on the internet.
When our 16 yr old dog passed, my great aunt had sketched me a picture of the dog and put it in a frame. I loved it.
This. What really helped us was when people acknowledged the loss, even if it was just with a card. Pets are family, too.
