ISO food ideas for 1st birthday barnyard theme

My BFF is planning for her son's 1st birthday party later this month, and I have offered to help with the food.  It will be a weekend afternoon, and we're planning for light & heavy apps.  The theme is barnyard, so I was hoping to find some cute ideas (either the actual food or the presentation).  Any suggestions?

Re: ISO food ideas for 1st birthday barnyard theme

  • Brainstorming here...I guess you can play up the animals without being overly "you're eating a pig"...so maybe pigs in a blanket, cookies and milk, chicken nuggets (or something with egg), or maybe different cheese like the babybel or laughing cow (they may even have little goat/sheep cheeses).

Maybe you could serve each kids meal in a metal bucket with a farmery looking bandana/hankerchief as a napkin

  • I have made hay stack cupcakes.  I made vanilla cupcakes from a mix and put them into a mini cupcake pan without liners.  Grease the cupcake pan REALLY well. After cooking and cooling the cupcakes, place the cupcakes upside down and use yellow icing (again I used premade) to draw lines on the cupcakes to resemble haystacks. It takes a little time but was not difficult.  My mom and SIL came over to help make the cupcakes.
  • I've seen some kind of haystack candy using coconut and peanut butter maybe

or the land o lakes site has sheep cupcakes using mini marshmallows

  • I'd have some deviled eggs, or egg salad tea sandwiches.

Anything veggie and fruit related would be nice

What about some herbed cheese spread on proscuito or ham and wrapped around asparagus.

    Stuff little tomatoes with pesto

muffins with berries.  my mom makes some lemon muffins with raspberries and sprinkles them with sugar!  yum
