I asked about PCSing before b/c there's a chance that we may have to go to Elmo, AK all the way from Florida. I was wondering if we had any ladies up there who might want to share in their experiences, and how they like it. So far I've only heard good things, except for the cold, but I think I can deal with that. Thank y'all!
Re: Anyone at Elmo?
I'm confused. I've never heard of Elmo, AK, so I googled it, and they're saying it's a fictional town.
Is elmo short for Elmendorf? If so, I know people who've enjoyed it. It's been toward the bottom of our pref list before, below foreign countries but above pretty much everything in the south.
Yeah, I meant Elmendorf. My whole life has been talking in acronyms since we got married. Everyone says great things about it, I'm excited for everything but the move up there. We're in Florida now, so it's gonna be a long drive with 2 dogs. My only concerns are that I've lived in the south my entire life, I'm used to the Ga heat and humidity, so Florida wasn't much of a stretch. It's also gonna sound like I'm speaking a foreign language, with my accent. lol! I'm a little worried for our dogs, we have a doberman(or a greyhound mutt as far as the base will know) and a lab mutt. I'm not sure how they'll handle the snow.
I have to admit, I'm kind of jealous! Hopefully it all works out for you guys.
Thank you!
My dad was stationed up at Elmendorf for 3 years and we liked it. My parents weren't really outdoor people, so we didn't do much outside, but it is beautiful. That'd be the only advice I'd give is to get out and do stuff and enjoy what it has to offer...snowshoeing, skiing/snowboarding, etc. It will make the winter seem better since they don't have as much sunlight.
Since the sunlight hours are longer in the winter, invest in some good blackout curtains and/or blinds. I am a super light sleeper and struggled with this.
We've lived a lot of cold places, so to me Elmendorf wasn't really all that cold. You could always look into shoe grips for walking around if you're scared you or your husband might fall.
We lived in Eagle River, which wasn't too far of a drive from the base. It was a great little community.
That's all I can think of now, let me know if you have questions. Our dogs loved the snow, and so we didn't have problems with them adapting at all. Just make sure if the snow gets super deep that you create a path or something in the yard for them (ours like snow but didn't like sinking deep into it).
Thank you! We definitely wanna take advantage of all the outdoor activities. H is such an outdoor person, and during the milder weather I'd love to let the dogs run around. I'm super clumsy so grips will be a must.
