Just told my boss about the pregnancy

She did not react well.  Some combination of congratulations and cursing.  Ugh.  I feel really anxious now, but I'm glad it's over with.  I didnt really expect it to go great, but I had hoped.

Re: Just told my boss about the pregnancy

  • I had a similar reaction.

Don't worry about it, you're not the first or the last. She'll deal.

  • Oh, man that sucks.  Hopefully the bad reaction was just due to her being surprised, and she'll get her head out of her ass in the future.

  • Seriously?  That is crazy!  You are giving her plenty of notice and you can prepare for your leave.  I don't know any backstory here.  Why is she such a freak?  The place you work isn't super small, is it?

  • Don't let your Debbie Downer boss make you feel anxious about anything.  This is a happy announcement and she's being rude.  Bosses that feel compelled to make employees feel bad about things like this can eat a bag of dicks.
    image
  • Oh ** her.  She'll get over it.

  • We're a smallish company.  Our legal department is her, myself and another staff attorney,  a "contract administrator" that is hourlyand handles our really basic sales contracts, and a legal coordinator, that handles a lot of administrative work (which is crucial) as well as a lot of our compliance work (a smaller department my boss also oversees.  The legal coordinator is due a week after me.  And we have a huge volume of work.  So I knew she would freak.  But I was not quite prepared for how bad her reaction would be.  She already decreed no one could take vacation time while we are out.  Over the holidays.  Lovely.

  • That's exciting! I am still so shocked when I hear about poor reactions from employers. It's not like you'll be gone from your job next week, and mat leave is only 3 months. Trust me boss lady - the world will not end.

  • That is really dumb. It is not like you said, "oh hey I am leaving the office next week for a few months". They have several months to make up a plan. I am sure she just reacted without thinking how rude it would come across. Plus this just means you are awesome and they value you.
  • you're pregnant!?!

    congratulations!

OK, maybe I was being too easy on her.  She sounds like a peach.  I hope your coworkers are smart enough to blame this situation on her, and not on you/your other pg coworker.

  • I'm guessing she's probably happy for you but sad for herself because she knows she is royally screwed with you (and your coworker) being out on maternity leave.  So it's that combination of "yay for your pregnancy!" and "OMG WHAT AM I GOING TO DO SOMEONEKILLMENOW!"

Maybe this will encourage them to get you guys some help since you're drowning in your workloads as it is.

  • When she made the no vacation comment I asked how she and contract admin handled that before our team expanded (it was just them 2 years ago) and she snapped back that she worked 80 hours a week for 13 months (the period do time they were understaffed).  Okay then.  Ugh.  The rest of us are very friendly.  The other staff attorney is one of my best friends.  SO very supportive.  I'm just tense and upset and really wish I were still on Lexapro right about now.  Also just got more bad news about my FIL, who has been in and out of the hospital.  D and I don't even know how to tell him because he has C Diff, a bacterial infection, and so we're trying to avoid being around him, as exposure is dangerous, so he and the rest of the family are left to think we're just being assholes.

  • I'm sorry Christin, that's a lot to deal with.  Don't let your boss get you down.

  • I get people being really annoyed because having employees and coworkers out for maternity leave is a huge PITA for others who have to cover the work. I don't get thinking it's acceptable to express anything other than congratulations.

yes, I agree. It's hard dealing with people being gone for mat leave but sometimes life gets in the way of the job. Them's the breaks. A manager's job is to keep it to him/herself.

  • Ew, what a jerkface. I'm sorry, lady.

  • Good gracious, she's got plenty of time to figure out how the work is going to get done.  Sometimes life gets in the way of work.

If she's going to freak out about maternity leave, she ought to do it in private.

  • I'm always surprised when women act like this.  If there is one thing I learned while I was pregnant, is how poorly work place really can treat pregnant women and Making them feel quilty for being pregnant.

you can't worry about work, it's not worth it and it won't do any good.  If she can't get excited and act normal, that's her issue.

  • Geez, Christin. You really should have polled all your coworkers and clients before getting pregnant. Heaven forbid your boss be inconvenienced.

I hope she comes around soon. I'm really sorry about the situation with D's dad. Does your dr have any ideas on how you can protect yourself and still go see him? How are you doing otherwise?

  • She's probably just freaking out, Christin, and obviously, this is not your fault. She just has no tact and, as Fallin said, has no right to express anything to you other than congratulations.

My boss, a male, has been out on family leave basically a third of the time I've been working here. His son is seriously ill. He just up and left one day. No one was up in arms because, it's his son and we are all covering for him. There is no reason to view pregnancy as some sort of death sentence for the department. Shiit like this happens all the time.

    Sorry she's a jerk.

  • I havent spoken to my Doctor about it. It's the type of thing where people are supposed to wear gloves and scrubs to be around him, and D and I decided we weren't comfortable taking any risks.   Otherwise I'm doing well.  Occasional nausea, but still able to exercise and stick to a mostly healthy diet. Obviously tired, and still pretty ragey/emotional.  How are you feeling?  Have you seen your. Doctor yet?

I just walked in so i didn't get to read the responses but your post makes me sad and angry. It's so f'ed up that we live in a culture here where we have to be afraid to tell an employer that we're pregnant. It shouldn't be anxiety provoking announcement on the mother-to-be end.
  • I don't see my doctor until next Thursday. But I'm nauseated to some degree nearly 24/7, so right now I'm just worried about twins and trying to eat what I can.

  • That blows, Christin.  What a wench.

Re: C. diff.  He only spreads the spores while he has active diarrhea, so if he is on treatment and stops having diarrhea for 48 hours, you should be good without the gowns (and with lots of regular handwashing).  Obviously, different hospitals have different protocols, and you have to do what you feel comfortable with.  But that is our hospital policy and what I've been following at work.
