Gosh

Doctors are going to be the death of me. I went to get me seasonique refilled and was told by the base pham. that it has a reaction with me old migraine meds. I have been taking them together for awhile now. Now I have a really early doctors appointment in the morning. I am talking 7a.m.. So yay! How is everyones day going?

Re: Gosh

  • Yikes!  Bad reactions being possible sounds bad.

But, I love those early am appointments.  I always opt for them if I can get them, because I can be in, get seen, get whatever script (if there is one) filled, and get home in time to start work at my normal hour.

So far, my day has been wacky.  I saw the aftermath of a pretty bad accident on my way to the gym this morning, and they were still cleaning up when I drove by it on my way home.  :(  I hope everyone is OK - chances are they are, because the only crumpled parts of the cars were non-passenger parts.

And then I got home and scrambled to get supper into the crock pot, make my breakfast, and empty the dishwasher, all around the wandering of my parents in the kitchen.  They're in town visiting for a few days, and dad was trying to empty the dishwasher, but doesn't know where anything goes.  And then mom wanted to make breakfast for them while I was in there, but she has a fractured arm, so she can't lift anything, or move much, so I had to fetch and grab stuff for her. (or deal with dad coming into the kitchen that is barely more than a one-butt kitchen, much less a three-butt one!)

And, now I'm racking my brain trying to figure out a suitable lunch spot for us.  They seem to want to go out to eat, but I have literally _just_ started a new diet program (yesterday was day 1), and I am not entirely certain where I could go and expect to get food that will meet this diet's restrictions.  (it's a long story, but basically, DH and I have accepted a challenge to eat Paleo for a month... it's a change-up for me, as I am used to having whole grains in pretty much every meal, but otherwise, I'm liking it...  I just have no clue where to eat out...)

DH and I looked into going Paleo for a bit, and I found this about eating at chain restaurants...thought it might help:  http://paleoatpenn.blogspot.com/2011/02/eating-paleo-at-chain-restaurants.html

I'm frustrated today because my dogs keep throwing up in my house.  We figured out what it was for the littlest one, and now my 125 pound Mastiff-St. Bernard mix is doing it.  It isn't fun cleaning up throw up anymore.  Hopefully we can get his food regulated to the point where he won't throw up anymore.

Other than that, just at work.

Thanks!  That's helpful.  Now to figure out if any of the better options are near us.  :)

So far I'm not having any trouble figuring out food options at home, but the eating out thing does make me nervous.  Sadly, I'm not sure I really believe any of the information about the paleo diet that's out there, but seeing as we've been given the challenge, I want to stick to it as closely as I can, just because I'm stubborn.

The dog issue sounds rough.  We don't have pets ourselves, so it's not something we've had to figure out, but I know others that have had to do it, and it's just a pain to deal with and to figure out.  Good luck!

  • I hadn't realized I had messed up spelling and wording so bad. Lol Sorry I was doing two things at once. Clearly I am the best multi-tasker there is, no? What exactly is Paleo? I am sorry to hear about the doggy problems. We do not have any fur-babies yet but I sure can say the sick doggy is one thing I don't miss

Be thankful! I was on it for 2 years before a new OB/GYN informed me I was a stroke waiting to happen because it was causing serious migraines.

Early docs appointments are the best, because you have a better chance they will be on time.

  • I have read horror stories about Seasonique. I have been thinking about getting back on my old BCP. This stuff has messed my hormones up bad
  • Audette - We do primal(mostly) which is like paleo but not nearly as restricitive. It goes based off the principles of what our ancestors ate. Meat, nuts, fruits, veggies. That's it. Nothing processed, no starches, no dairy(although we drink goats milk), no grains, etc. We love the changes we've made, although we stray occasionally but we don't stress too much over it. If you're interested for after your challenge. :)

Paleo is short for paleolithic, and is a wacky diet based on the idea that the human body has not been designed to consume grains.  Some varients also restrict dairy (including the one I am doing).  It's also called the "Caveman Diet".  It basically focuses on lean meats, good fats, and _lots_ of veggies and fruit, with the removal of grains, legumes, and dairy.

I'm still on the fence, but my brain keeps telling me that this is all bunk, and after the month, I'll find that it really makes no difference for me to not have grains.  But, I also figure I can't honestly say it's rediculous unless I give it an honest chance.  It isn't horrendously unhealthy, though, so I figure a month won't hurt me.  The lack of dairy does have me a bit concerned, due to calcium limitations, but I'll make sure to get in lots of dark green leafies, and I'm continuing my multivitamin.  We'll see how I feel at the end of the challenge.  Or if I end up sick in the middle of it!  :)

I know a number of folks who swear by this particular diet, and I'll admit, their vehemence about it does have me curious.

  • Hmmm. That sounds interesting. I think I will ask P if he would like to try it. Not much it could hurt I don't think

Yeah.  My biggest concerns are the calcium, and vitamin D.  I plan to start taking supplements whenever I can next get to the store to pick some up.  If only for peace of mind...  :)

Yeah, we're going fairly strictly at first, but I suspect we will relax into more of a Primal take on it, after some time.  For me, the biggest incentive is that some Primal diets allow dairy, and I don't think I can give up dairy in a sustainable diet...  Grains, yes.  Dairy, no.  Giving up beans for the long term will make me sad, but I can survive.

I switched to goat milk because it actually is the most similar to human milk and therefore easier to digest. And I chose feta cheese over anything else now. But yeah, my cheese wasn't going anywhere. LOL.

  • Thinking this over I believe I could do this without a doubt. However P drinks milk everyday and bread. So I don't know if it would work with him

Interesting.  Perhaps when I do add dairy back in, I should try out just goats milk/cheese at first.  That would be a reasonable mid-way point, and I can see how the different types of dairy affect me.

You know, thinking about it, I think I remember mom once telling me she had to give me goats milk as a kid for some reason.

It's a bit sweeter(I think) but it's kind of nice to add to milk and not need sugar(I don't use a lot anyway).  Some people who are lactose intolerant can tolerate goats milk, did you have issues with milk as a kid? DH grew up on goats milk and even fresh cows milk. The man loves his dairy.

  • I'm in the "it's bunk" crowd.  Our bodies didn't evolve up to the point of cavemen and then stop.  And surviving to be cavemen doesn't even mean that that kind of food is "best" for us.  There's no real science behind the evolutionary facade.

Now, I think people are successful on it b/c they're makinga real effort to think about what they're eating.  A disciplined approach to food is always going to be better than nothing.  And avoiding processed foods is definitely beneficial.

I also can't get over the amount of meat consumed in those diets.  Talk about unsustainable.

That's sort of what DH and I think...  We're not exactly the target audience for the challenge, because we already eat mostly clean food, much of it made from scratch, relatively few processed foods, etc.

But, for someone to go from, say, eating out a couple times a day, often at fast-food type places, and then shift to this method of eating?  Or even from eating a lot of frozen prepped meals with few fruits and veggies to this?  They'd likely notice a _huge_ benefit...

  • I benefit from it mostly because I try to go gluten free due to my mild intolerance.and I don't eat a ton of meat. Usually only dinner.

To me, that's a lot of meat :)

Whenever people post their weekly meal plans I'm surprised that there's meat almost every day.  I shouldn't be b/c I know that's how most Americans eat, but every damn time I see it I'm surprised which is really pretty dumb of me.  Since I get most of my protein from grains, cheese, and beans, taking those away would leave me having to eat a lot more meat.
