So.. let's talk alcohol.

I like beer, and it's causing problems with the whole weight loss thing. I don't drink light beer- if it's beer, it better be craft brew.

When we go out, I don't mind subbing in a mixed drink but I have no idea what is on the lower end of the calorie spectrum. I usually drink less if it's liquor v beer.

I'm a little panicky about this with St. Patty's day coming up because it is one of my favorite holidays Sad but I don't want to de-rail any successes I've made.

Anyone have a favorite lower calorie alcohol drink?

Re: So.. let's talk alcohol.

  • As much as I love beer, it has to be something I drink in serious moderation (or drink it on a day when I don't eat much).

I stick to wine.  5oz is about 100 calories I think.  Liquor/mixed drinks are so scary because of mixers.  When I want something like that, I get a vodka tonic w/lime.

  • I love beer, and when I'm not PG, I just drink it moderation--one normal-sized glass, maybe two if I'm out for a night. I'd rather drink one good beer than a million crappy low-cal drinks. I just try to pace myself and enjoy it.

  • my go to drink is a kettle one with club soda with lemon.
  • I love beer, too, and only the good stuff.  No Bud Lite or Miller 64 swill for this girl.  I have found that, if I want to lose weight, then I pretty much have to cut it out completely or indulge only 1-2x/month at most.  I can maintain my weight and drink it a little more regularly, but still not very much at all.

I like tequila on the rocks with lime, and wine.  That's about it for booze for me.

  • Gin and tonic or diet sprite and vodka are my low cal drinks.
  • I'm big into good, craft beer, too, and I don't settle for less, even when trying to live healthy. I believe that almost everything can be a part of a healthy diet, just in moderation. For me, I keep my alcohol consumption to one day a week, and if I'm drinking beer, I try to limit it to two pints. I do like my vodka, too, so if I'm doing that kind of drinking it's vodka with club soda and a splash of cranberry juice.

  • I also suffer from beer-snob syndrome. When I make it a point to have a beer, it'll be the best beer I can get my hands on. And I log those calories too, you betcha.

When I'm training for a race, I will give up alcohol almost entirely I'll go from 2-3 somethings a week to 0-1 somethings. And I'll only indulge if I don't have a run workout the next day.

  • Another huge craft brew fan here. My go to drinks if I'm drinking liquor (depending on my mood) are dirty martinis, cherry vodka & diet coke and vodka w/sugar free red bull. In all of those instances the calories are only coming from the liquor. It's the sugary mixers you have to watch out for.

  • the irish make whisky, yes?  why don't you just drink whisky?

or you could have one beer and then switch to whisky.

either way I think the answer is hard liquor.

  • I find that I can enjoy Michelob Ultra if it's hot out and I drink it before any other beer.  Of course I can't have some rich delicious oatmeal stout and then switch to an Ultra and be at all satisfied.  But Ultra isn't so bad when I want a little treat but can't afford the calories.

But mostly I like wine better anyway.

  • I've never been a beer drinker so I can't help there but I do like the hard liquor.  I've been making vodka or Coconut Rum and crystal light drinks.  Again that way you are getting all your calories from the liquor instead of the mixers.  I have an appletini crystal light packet that I'm going to mix with Vodka tonight and see if it tastes like a real appletini.

  • I too, love my beer and it sucks that it is so high in calories.  We only drink on the weekends and I usually start with a good beer and then switch to something else like wine or a vodka/soda.

Some of the caloric info is STAGGERING. I love me a G&T, but I won't drink them unless it's summer and I can sweat it right out on my deck :p

I'm totally a beer snob here too. My husband taught me the ways. That being said, I only have a craft beer from our kegerator after a nice long run on Saturdays. That is what I run for. The nice cold draft beer. We did a race here in Houston and a craft brewery was giving out there beer and it just made my day knowing that!

When I do go out I tend to drink vodka and water or vodka diet. I hate hangovers so I try not to drink a lot. I always alternate one drink one water. When we go out to local breweries I will have a beer or two but it always tends to be on Saturday after long runs so I figured I just ran for 2 hours whats 2 beers? :)

  • MMmmm beer. Can't wait to have one again!

Anywho - yes, I also love craft beers. I have also been known to drink light mass produced water beer. Depends on the occasion. Hot summer day on the golf course? Light beer from the beer cart girl. Bellied up at my favorite pub with local micros on tap? Something hoppy and heavy.

When I was working on weight loss, I just counted those calories and moved on. I usually had beer on my surplus or maintenance days. If I was having a drink on my deficit days, I would stick with one beer or one glass of white wine.

    Some calorie counts:

1.5 oz 80 proof liquor - gin, rum, vodka, whiskey, tequila - about 100-120 calories. Mix with a calorie free mixer i.e. diet soda, soda water.

6 oz red or white wine - about 110-120 calories (not super sweet stuff like moscatos or ports...those will run higher)

12 oz light beer - bud light, miller lite, coors light - 110-130 calories.

If you want to stick with your preferred drink, a lot of calorie counts are out there on the interwebz. This one is pretty complete:

  • Thanks for the ideas and websites. We did a craft brew tour this weekend and I drank so much :( I didn't even want to think of how many calories I drank.
  • mmmm.....beer. Another beer snob here.

I gave it up for Lent Indifferent and so far I have not missed it THAT much. In its place, I am having red wine (a couple glasses a week). I also like tequila and squirt which is a refreshing drink

    Booo.

Apparently there are a couple of pub crawls in the area (like, Dupont Circle area) that may be offering discounts to runners for the crawl. DH and I have reservations at Founding Farmers at 6:30 so Imma have to have my carbombs early :D

  • just for the record, several people mentioned tonic, which is actually very high in calories. It's about the same as regular pop. Soda is calorie-free.

To your original question, I've cut out beer almost entirely, not just for calories but also because it messes with my stomach. I still drink way too much for weight loss though. For lower calories, I still to wine and liquor (usually mixed with soda). Unfortunately, alcohol doesn't go well with weight loss for me. (Not that I'm stopping!)

Yeah, but the numbers are based off a 12oz portion. That makes sense for the beers on the list, but not the hard alcohol & mixed drinks. I mean, it's much more reasonable to expect someone may drink 1 beer or 2 mixed drinks rather than 12 shots of Everclear or Cuervo.
