Help me get it up for salad, please.

I LOVE salad.  I really do.  And I make kickass salads.  Last night per the menu plan I was supposed to make Greek salad, which I love, but for some reason when I have a salad on the menu I get all cranky about it when I get home from work.  Like, "I don't WANT to make salad!" and I think it's all hard to make a salad and cut up all the stuff and I want something hot.

But I'll be really happy later, when I'm eating the salad and I'm like, "wow, that whipped up in a jiffy! I love salad!"

I have a salad disconnect.

Maybe it's the cold weather.

Re: Help me get it up for salad, please.

  • For some reason I can't do side salads at home but I love, love, love having one at a restaurant. Go figure. It's not like a meal at home is any different but for some reason I have that disconnect.

I also have trouble with salads as main courses unless it's summertime. I really prefer main course salads when it's hot.

  • I also struggled with "want something hot", so I usually put something on my salad like grilled chicken, sauteed/roasted veggies. especially in winter.

Is prepping the base in the AM or on the weekend an option so it doesn't feel like so much work? Then just grill/saute, etc when you get home from work.

  • I love big salads with lots of stuff. I always struggle with not having the right things on hand. One thing I have done this week that has been great is stock up from the Whole Foods Salad bar with lots of veggies etc. Then I can just throw the salad together and its cheaper than buying all the components individually and no prep necessary. Just toss and serve. You could do the same by prepping some grilled chicken or shrimp or salmon ahead and then having it ready to go with your salad ingredients. You could also buy and prep all your salad ingredients ahead and then you would have your own salad bar in the fridge.
What about serving soup with the salad? That would add that warm comfort thats missing from a regular salad.

Your description about the salad reminds me of the scene in the 40 year old Virgin where Steve Carrell describes making the egg salad.

  • The salad I get it up for best (love that, btw) has roasted veggies on it...something hot ON your salad. It's delicious.

    Roasted Root Vegetable Salad

  • Add a side of garlic bread, preferably cheesy.  I'm with you, by the time I get home I want something hot and comforting.

This is GENIUS.  I'm in love with you a little bit at this moment.

I've never really been fond of the whole soup and salad thing.... It's like salad and liquefied salad.

  • I'm the same way, when it's colder out I definitely prefer something hot. Sometimes we do garlic knots or bread and that makes it better but usually we save salads for warmer weather too!

Yes This might be the funniest thing I've read all day!

  • Add some hot gyro meat to the greek salad :) yum
  • We had salads for dinner the other night and i thought the same thing. It turned out to be a freezing cold night, but we had some red wine and that made up for the lack of hot food!

  • I sometimes like to add black beans and corn, or rice noodles to my salads.  It makes them more filling, and you have a hot ingredient as well.
  • oooh I just remembered THIS salad - it has hot & cold components. So good. You must try it before fall produce goes out the window!

  • I love entree salads when I'm out, but I have trouble getting excited about them at home too. This time of year I definitely need to add something hot. In the summer, I am much better about enjoying a cold dinner.
