Cooper seems to be a happy, well adjusted kitty. He follows us everywhere, loves food, loves to be with people, loves to play with Spencer... but he almost never purrs. I caught him doing it once, about a week after we got him, when I was petting him. Then yesterday when I got home after another week away, he purred with cuddling with me. That's it. Just twice in the 2 months I've had them. Isn't that weird!?
Re: Anyone's cat never purr?
My childhood cat (Big Kitty, also male) at my parent's house never purrs, or rarely does. If he does, he is either in a REALLY deep sleep or extremely content.
I don't think it means anything. They're not unhappy. Must be a "guy cat" thing. They're just "men of few words" or purrs if you will.
Does he meow a lot? Big Kitty doesn't meow a lot.

5 cats. 1 baby.
Lurker here
I have a cat who purrs all. the. time. I also have another cat who didn't purr much at the beginning. The one that purrs all the time is female and the other is male. It took the male a really long time to "learn how to purr". He used to only do it when he had happy feet in my hair, then it graduated to when I woke up in the morning, and he was rolling around on the floor. Now he purrs when I pet him and when I cuddle with him. He used to do it a few times a week and now he does it a few times a day.
How old is he? How old was he when he was adopted? My kitty was taken away from his mom at an early age and I think that's why it took him so long to warm up. He only purrs with me, not DH.
He's about 7 months old, and was about 5 months old when I adopted him. I don't think he came from a great situation so maybe that's why. My other male (and previous male) are huge purrers. Lily purrs when she's not being grumpy. ;-)
Maybe he'll purr more as he gets older. Just a matter of curiosity to me. Interesting to hear other people's stories. I really do think he's very happy in his new home, if I do say so myself

If you don't think he came from a great situation, then that may be why. Just give it time! You have to let them trust you. You have to know what makes him purr and then let that situation happen.
For example, my kitty would only purr and do happy feet if I was on my stomach. He would then jump on my back and do happy feet. I just learned to read his cues and let him be comfortable. He's a big scardy cat and hisses at loud noises.
If you think he's happy, he probably is. Just let him warm up!
ETA: I got my kitty at 12 weeks old. He was taken away from his mom at 5-6 weeks.
