Wypadek I need you!!

Ok, Im so sorry this is super long, but I had my 1st oh sh!t post-op moment today & I need your wisdom & reassurance!!! Ok, so you know Cooper supposedly got released to do...whatever right? So Sunday I took him for a 3ish mile run & he was fine, & he's been fine since.

So today, I got home from work early b/c Coop had a heartworm test @ the Vet, which we usually walk or run to b/c its only about a mile away from our house. So, we ran (which btw, SUCKED for me. Ate Thin Mint GS cookies all day, plus its super warm here today so all the snow is melting & the trail was 1/2 under water & I got completely soaked, plus it was windy- ugh, just sucked.) we got to the Vet & Cooper had his draw & we left & kept running another mile or so down the path, then turned around & went home. Overall it was a total run of under 4miles. Cooper was fine the whole time. Chugging along, a little slow @ times but I think that might have been b/c he pooped & I made him carry the poop bag on the plastic holder we have attached to his leash, which is right up around his shoulders Lol. (screw that sh!t, Im not carrying those sh!tbags anymore! HA!!) He always walks or runs semi-sideways when I hang one on there.

Anyway, we get home, & I put on my boots (over soaking wet socks-ick!) to go clean up the backyard b/c so much snow has melted (& it always helps to try & keep up on that sh!t-pun intended!). I opened up the backdoor w/o leashing Cooper up b/c he's been doing ok w/not bolting out the door. Well of course, what does he do? Bolts. ::sigh:: I hollered @ him & he held back from his usual crazy backyard antics some..anyway we were out there for about 25 minutes & he was just walking around.

DH got home & Cooper ran over to him, once he got to him, he stood there holding his leg up Sad & perhaps even let out a little yelp?? DH & I were like...wtf? B/c Coop didn't even do anything! So DH goes to take him in the house & Coop turned...to the outside we think? to go inside & he yelped again! Then DH said he wouldn't go up the TWO stairs going inside. Sad So DH carried him, & said once he got him in the house he was ok. Then I came inside & Coop came running over to me & put his left foot down & a step & again, yelped (ok, now I was Crying)

We immediately took him & iced him for like 40 min (20 min for the outside & 20 for the inside of the knee) & when he got up after that he was a little hesitant of his leg. It was up completely for a sec or two, then he put it down but you could see he wasn't putting all his weight on it. We agreed that he needed to just slow down & rest. We had to leave anyways for awhile, so we threw his cone on him & left.

So we get home, & he's ok. He greeted us @ the door w/4 paws on the floor & I was SO relieved!!! I took him out to go potty on a leash & again, he was fine. Gave him his Deramaxx (he got it post-op but he gets it anyways daily for arthritis) & DH is now icing him.

I swear to frickin PETE if I messed him up by taking him for a run, or letting him go out the door that ONE time w/o a leash I will fricking DIE!!! I canNOT take another issue w/these frickin knees!!!!!!!

Ok, that is all Lol. Thanks for "listening"!! I hope all is well w/you & the kids!! Your post made me LOL!

Re: Wypadek I need you!!

  • Deep breathes!!! I'll betcha money Cooper over did it and because he's a goofy dog was like "wtf mate?!" The fact that he's putting weight on it now is good. Ziva had her moment of "wtf mate?!" and we had her take it easy for a couple days and now the little shyt is fine (like, lets go crazy when its bed time fine).

The vet wouldn't release him for 'whatever' if he wanted any restrictions at all right? These guys know what they're doing, so I REALLY don't think you broke him. Also, I know Collins has some prima-donna in her so he could have been milking the sympathy a little bit (remind me to tell you about the time right after we got her that her paw got stomped by a bigger dog). I mean really, given the option when I'm a bit stiff of walking up a couple stairs or being carried? I'll take getting carried every time thankyouverymuch.

And maybe he was mad at you for making him carry his own poo (GENIUS by the way, I'm remembering that)....

  • Oh thank you SO much for talking me down! I was very reassured when we came home & he was walking ok, but still secretly freaking out inside!! I just needed to get that off my chest to someone who "gets it" ya know?? So again, thanks for listening!!!

He slept on the bed w/us last night (Embarrassed spoiled rotten sympathy-card-playing dog!) & when he got up this morning I saw that he was back to 3 legs, but it was only for a second, b/c then he jumped off the bed (EEEK!) but was not phased by the impact, & immediately began walking on all 4's. DH took him for a walk this am & said that he was fine the whole time. BIG Phew!!!

So ya, I guess we just gotta still take it easy. It still has only been 3 weeks, & he's gotta learn how to be a dog w/o that inside stabilization from the line, even though the scar tissue should be providing all that support now...Regardless, he's going to have to learn how to watch it, ya know?

Haha & do share the "horrific" paw stomping incident!!

Lemme tell you, that poop bag holder is the greatest invention EVER!!! Buy the 3 pack & spread the joy! :D

  • You're exactly right. He has to learn how to use his new knee. I'm glad he's doing better today, even if he's being ornery. Lol

So Collins was about 10 to 12 weeks old and we took her to puppy play group. She likes to antagonize the bigger dogs and she weighed maybe 10 lbs at this point. Well a bigger dog got tired of her and went to go basically push her away an put her in her place and ended up stomping her little paw. Omg you'd think it got cut off the way she was yelping.

We picked her up to make sure there wasn't anything wrong and that she just got scared and then put her back down and she sat at my feet  till it was time to go. We leashed her and ziva up to leave and she was limping like she was in soooo much pain so I picked her up and carried her to the at with the intent of callin the vet the next morning. We get home and I put her down and she runs like she was never stomped.

This happened in January in Nebraska. Little prima Donna didn't want to walk on the cold pavement!!

  • Hahaha!! SOOO funny!

Also, I have to tell you, Cooper has been sleeping on the bed w/us every night this week (Embarrassed)..& possibly all weekend??? DH has been soooo pissed every night b/c Coop keeps getting on the bed! Well, last night, it finally dawned on me why he (Coop) has been so extra clingy/snuggly lately at night (normally he's fine on his couches in the LR), well its b/c he doesn't want to have his cone put on at night! B/c when he sleeps w/us, I don't make him wear it!! Spoiled.rotten.dog!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • LOL!! Smart puppers he is!! Sad days he still has to wear the cone. Ziva was sooooo happy when he got to go coneless again
