Decorators, please come in

We have a sectional in our family room that is about ready to bite the dust, plus it went better in our last house than the house we're currently in.

What do you think of this accent chair?  Is it gaudy?  I think it's kind of fun, but I have the worst time picturing how something will look.  What looks cute online doesn't always translate to that in person.  Also, I think I'm leaning towards the styling of this chair with the red couch in this link (5th picture):

  • It is NMS.  Your floors are lovely!

This is exactly my problem; I have no idea what my style is.  Which explains why most of the walls in my house are still white.

Thanks!  I freakin' love those floors.  We did have carpet in there at first, but last summer we had the rugs removed and extended the flooring into the family room.

I'm open to furniture ideas if anybody has suggestions.  I seriously have no clue.  I hate country-type styles.  I think we're more contemporary, but not too modern (if that makes any sense).

  • I think if you like the color/print of the couch and chair then they'd be great. They look nice together and would look pretty in your room.

I read a lot of decorating mags/blogs and something I read recently for people having a hard time determining a style for their house was to look at your wardrobe. The idea being that the patterns you notice in your wardrobe are likely things that feel comfortable to you and you could try to transfer the ideas to your home decor.

  • I really like it, but I'd go totally mid-century mod with the rest of the room* if it were me. I'm not a fan of the way it's styled in the red couch room.

  • I like the look of a solid sofa with a matching printed chair. I'm not a SUPER big fan of the print you picked out, personally, but if you like then I think it would like really nice in your space.

For reference sake, my husband had to physically pull me away from this so-hideous-it's-cute lime/yellow accent chair in Ashley furniture. So, know that me not liking your particular print is probably more a reflection of my bad taste than yours. :D

  • I like the chair. NMS, but I can definitely see it in your living room. I, personally, would not pair it with a bold red couch. I'd find something neutral taken from the tan in the fabric and have the chair as your "statement piece".

My expertise is taken from HGTV and DIY network, so do with it what you will.

  • If you go with the chair I wouldn't keep the rug in the same room.
  • I love your room and love the style of the chair but... I hate to say this... my grandma was a HUGE floral furniture fan and the print just reminds me of something in a grandmas house.  My other grandmother actually has 2 couches in a print similar to this and while the room looks lovely, its just looks very grandma"ish" for a living/family room.

My style is pretty different though.  To give you an idea, I have a pair of this chair in a room with red walls.  My chair is actually lighter gold and deep browns but I cant find that pic.  But I think a print like this would look good.

  • Oh, no.  That rug is probably going as well (or I'm finding another home for it in another room).

What would actually be ideal is if I could hit the Mega Millions lottery and then just hire someone from Pottery Barn to decorate and furnish the room; problem solved.  <sigh>

I think S and I are going to have to go shopping soon and figure out what we like.  Thanks for all of the ideas, though.  It does help.  I'm going to run out at lunch and pick up a few style magazines and get ideas as well.

I suggest Traditional Home. It has lots of "real" room photos and their recommendations aren't so high-end that no human could afford them (I'm looking at you, Dwell!)

  • That chair is TOTALLY my style. I love it. I'm not good at decorating so I don't have any advice or tips but I just want to pop in to say that it's super cute.

BTW- my company sells to Raymour and Flanigan. Small world. :)
