Dear Community,
Our tech team has launched updates to The Nest today. As a result of these updates, members of the Nest Community will need to change their password in order to continue participating in the community. In addition, The Nest community member's avatars will be replaced with generic default avatars. If you wish to revert to your original avatar, you will need to re-upload it via The Nest.
If you have questions about this, please email help@theknot.com.
Thank you.
Note: This only affects The Nest's community members and will not affect members on The Bump or The Knot.
The Nest and Pinterest- look.
In case you haven't caught it on the other boards- the Nest is pinning pics from it's forums and attributing them to your Nest name, linking back to the forums (not the source of the photo, be it your blog or flickr or whatever). This can be a big issue if you enjoy the relative anonymity here and someone recognizes something they've pinned as something they've seen on your blog, or photo stream, or IRL and *poof* they have your forum screen name.

I recognize some of these. And they're doing it to baby and pet pics, too.
Re: The Nest and Pinterest- look.
The issue is that most message boards, including the Nest, all have the same "once you post it on our forum, we can use your words/images however we want." in their terms of use. Same as if you ever post anything to tinypic. I am surprised it is only now becoming an issue that people are getting in an uproar about.

WHY ARE THE NEST GODS SO STUPID?????!!!!!
I'm sorry to yell, but seriously! They really know nothing about their user base and the fact that 99% of us like to maintain some separation between our Nest life and our real life.
This will make me stop posting pics of my projects here. Not that I've posted anything in months, heh.
But then, maybe it's a moot point as I might leave the boards altogether once the switch the national boards to the new format. I already find myself avoiding my local board because I can't stand using the new design.
Their TOU *DO NOT* allow them to publish pictures or data outside of their "Nest network of sites"- NO where is permission granted to use photos on social media networks that require copyright permission for photo upload.
And Pinterest in particular gets icky- since *their* TOU now claims copyright to everything uploaded (which would NEVER hold up to a challenge). So even if you do believe that you're transferring copyright to the Nest when you link an image in their forums (NOT the same thing as uploading it to their galleries) for use on their sites/newsletters- you are NOT giving them permission to upload them to a third party who claims their own copyright permissions.
Me? I don't have a dog in this fight- I haven't shared anything in ages.
(I could honestly care less since we all know that anything you post on the internet is "out there" for eternity and can be reposted without your knowledge anyways).
I do find it interesting that many are upset not that the Nest is pinning their images, but that they aren't pinning from the poster's blog. If they Nest was pinning from their blogs, I doubt there would be so much fuss.
Apparently, my life is not exciting enough that I need to stress myself over a few pins. No one would care enough about what I am up to LOL!

Couldn't care less...sorry, big pet peeve!
Could it be that people wouldn't be upset about pinning from their blogs because that doesn't out them on TN, as cmeon described in her OP? I think that's the distinction.
Oh girl, don't go all grammar on me--I'm posting one handed while singing the Wiggles with LA...and, cause I love ya, check your own typos in your first post
I get the "outing" idea, but by posting a link and photos from your blog here, you already out yourself to anyone who uses a search engine.

I don't think it's right of the Nest to do this. They have to realize how hard we work on our blogs, and the sticky subject of "giving credit" is heavily discussed on multiple boards. I just don't understand.
ETA: In response to outing the screennames. I have no issue with that. My blog name is in my siggy, so it's not a huge secret who I am. I'm upset (obviously) that their pins don't direct to the blog post that the idea is from.

I think the only things that really bothers me is that they are using the photos in a way not specified in the terms of use, as a marketing tool to bring people to the nest/bump.
Anyone can pin from a post, and I am sure that people do. Not everyone who posts a photo/project has a blog for someone to pin from.
Man, they haven't pinned any of my projects!
I don't care really. I know once I put stuff on here, on my blog, etc I expect it can and will get everywhere. As long as no one is claiming my kids for their own!
As for my identity, my pinterest name is the same as my name here and as my blog identity, so if someone was googling they'd find me in all those places.

I am not too worried about this either.
Maybe I am paranoid, but I use this screen name just for certain purposes. I would never talk about politics or *** about my job or my family under this name because I know it is linked to the blog that friends and family follow.
We use a free service from TN and TN is a business. I understand their desire to drive traffic to their sites and social media is definitely one way to do that.
All that being said, I do believe this was a poorly conceived plan on the part of TN. If I clicked on a recipe pin only to be taken to a forum post, I would assume the pinner doesn't know how to pin properly and would move on really quickly.

Update from Bump Kathleen:
Because some of our users were upset about their photos being pinned from the message boards, moving forward we will not be pinning community photos from users who we have not received permission from first. Our intention was never to reveal users' personal information, but to promote the boards and help them grow.
If any users have questions about this, please ask them to email me at feedback@thenest.com.
