HR arranged for my formal orientation. Would you contact your superior prior to orientation to iron out a plan for the first day you report to work (day after orientation)?

Four weeks until my actual start date, so when would you contact her?

I wouldn't contact, but that's just me.  Most larger companies have a formal on-boarding process, and as long as you know you'll be pointed in the right direction after orientation, you should just plan to meet up with her then.  Congratulations!

I agree.  You might reach out to HR to clarify what to expect for day one and day two (ie your arrival time, short v long lunch break so should you bring a lunch or a book).
