nose fold issues (flat faced dogs)

anyone else have issues with nastiness building up in the nose fold?  We have always cleaned our pugs' faces regularly, but recently noticed Toby's nose fold is getting gross daily.  He has a lot of tears (he is my sad pug after all!) but it gets downright gooey in there ::shudder::  Sometimes a bit of blood too when i wipe it out :(

we are going to change foods soon, they are on a lamb and oatmeal kibble now.  i know allergies can cause ear problems, not sure if it's linked to nose goobers too.

Re: nose fold issues (flat faced dogs)

  • Do you clean it daily? Not that I have a dog, but I had heard you have to clean daily for pugs, bulldogs, etc.

  • Ick, goobers... I'm well familiar with them.

I use a hypo-allergenic baby wipe to clean out the goobers from the face folds and eyeballs. Then, I dip a q-tip in gold bond baby powder (MUST BE THE BABY POWDER - not the foot powder) and kind of pat the powder in there.

It might gunk up the first couple of times, but then just wipe it out and put more powder until it starts to stay dry.

    Good luck!

Oh, allergies - for what it's worth, Dozer has sever allerges (allergic to LIFE) and so it might be related, but I've never had anyone tell me specifically that it is.

  • Hello from another 2-pug mommy!  I would consider asking your vet about it since it sounds like it's gotten worse recently.  I wouldn't be surprised if allergies were a factor, though, since they can cause skin issues of all kinds.  Do you know what food you are going to switch to?

I've never experienced what you're describing with either of my pugs, but they both have decent snouts and very shallow nose folds, so they don't get very dirty.  I clean their face wrinkles once a week and monitor to see if they need to be cleaned more often (they do like to stick their faces in the sand at the beach).  I use an anti-bacterial wipe (Mal-a-Ket is the brand, I think).  Teddie's nose fold definitely gets dirtier than Skippy's, probably because Teddie produces more tears (thanks to dry eye ointment).

P.S. The picture of your two pugsters lumped on top of each other is one of my favorite pictures on TN.  I kind of wish my guys would do that!

  • I too am concerned that they maybe infected now and might be best seen by a vet.

For maintenance I typically recommend baby wipes to clean out the folds every other day, or daily in some cases.  And the baby powder is great for drying it out which is the root of the problem in the folds.

Has the tear production increased? and are they goopy? that can be a sign of a different problem (or could be related) and eye issues should not be taken lightly.

  • thanks everyone!  I do have a feeling it may be infected as it has worsened so much the last couple of weeks. :(  Poor baby Chubbs.  I think we are going to bump up his well pet visit and take him in next week.

Not sure what food to switch to, we have a couple of great natural pet food stores here in KC so lots of options.  Since they've been on lamb/oatmeal for 4 years I think we'll try a different protein, chicken or beef.  Hoping for something with a similar price point as Healthwise ($55 for the biggest bag, lasts about 6 weeks for us).

Caz- it took 2 years for our first "pug pile" to happen, and I think it's only happened once since then.  It is always short lived as one will start to hump the other and then they fight.

love all the other pugs in this post :)  2 are better than 1, but so much trouble!

"Pug pile" - I love it!!!!!!!  We adopted Skippy almost 22 months ago (it will be 2 years at the end of May), so maybe in a few months, we'll get one!  Skippy does try to snuggle with Teddie almost every night (always in the smaller of the two beds that are in our bedroom), but Teddie will have none of it and moves to the other bed unless it is really cold or he is just too exhausted to move.  Yay double pugs (and single pugs, too, of course)!

  • I clean face wrinkles weekly, but Archie (shih tzu) ended up with a yeast infection in his tiny wrinkle under one eye last year. The vet gave us special medicated wipes to use until the infection cleared up, and we've been keeping a chart of when we wipe wrinkles to make sure it happens on schedule.
