new iPad or iPad 2?

Which should I get? The new iPad on the 16th or the iPad 2 at it's new discounted price? Also, should I pay extra to get the 4G (or 3G for iPad 2) or Wifi only? I wouldn't pay for 3G/4G each month - only when I travel...

Re: new iPad or iPad 2?

  • I would go with the newest technology.  We have the original iPad, the iPad 2, and just ordered the iPad 3 with 3G.  You can combine your data package with your cell phones to make it more affordable (depending on your carrier.)

  • If you can swing it, I'd be the newest iPad. My iPad 2 is awesome, but I wouldn't mind the newest one.

  • I would get the new one as I don't think a slight price reduction is worth outdated hardware that possibly not be supported by iOS updates with the next hardware update. But I wouldn't get be set on getting one on the release date if you didn't already preorder. If it is anything like the iPad 2 it was very difficult to get them in stores for awhile.

If you were planning on spending the money anyway, go ahead and get the iPad 2S (because that is totally what it is!).  It's not that much of a difference, price-wise.

  • I would get the new one.
  • I would go with the ipad 2.  I wouldn't get the 4G because if you travel a lot of airlines are offering WIFI on flight.
  • Newest technology is great if you are big on the best resolution, but if you want a tablet and want a better price the iPad 2 is totally awesome.  Have it Love it.

As for 4G I would say skip it if you have a smart phone.  Rarely have I ever needed to use 4G on the iPad because I am always using WIFI either at home or in coffee shops, when I do need to use a data plan to look up something I just pull out my iPhone instead.

  • The only reason I would consider the iPad 2 if you can afford the new one is if you plan to carry it around with you all the time. When I switched from the 1 to the 2, the weight difference was extremely noticeable. The new model lands in between the two, but this is a big downside for me since I keep it in my purse.

With the new model out, the apps are going to be designed and developed targeting the new hardware, so I won't be surprised if some apps start to feel sluggish on the 2. And I hear the display really is incredible! (The advantages aren't enough for me to justify the extra weight and the price, so I'm taking a year off from my iPad purchasing, but I will probably upgrade to the next model.)

As for the 4G, it really depends on how you'll use it. It sounds like the WiFi-only would be enough for you if you would only use the 4G when you travel. Like PPs said, if you have a smartphone with 3G already, you probably won't get much use out of it, and so many places have WiFi these days that even with my WiFi-only iPad1, I was usually able to find a hotspot when I needed one. I have the 3G for my iPad2, but I don't have a data plan for my phone, and I was already shopping for a netbook when the iPad was announced (I didn't get 3G on my first one because we weren't sure if I'd be able to use it overseas, so from the beginning the plan was to upgrade to the 2 and get my 3G then).
