Tiny update on little old puggie.

I posted last week that we found out he has cancer. We have been monitoring his weight at the vet because he's losing significantly, and we're afraid it may be the cancer. He's 12, and already had cancer that I treated with chemo at the age of 4. Then he had a stroke at 9 and has a permanent head tilt and is blind in one eye. Treating the cancer isn't something I would do to him. He's already been through so much. Add to that terrible arthritis in his back and hind end that has really flared up in the past 2 weeks, and dementia. I was ready to ease his suffering last week.

My vet convinced me to try arthritis meds. I was hesitant, because I wasn't sure how well they could really work. And then on top of that, it wouldn't cure his dementia. But we tried it. He's now been on it 8 days, and the difference is pretty significant. He can lay down/sit/stand with more ease. His back is no longer hunched. He can stand at the elevated water bowl without falling over. And some how, it's let him sleep through the night again. He hasn't paced in 4 days. I also did a bunch of research and people mentioned putting a small tshirt on him because it may make him more secure. That was an easy thing to try, because I just used one of my kids tshirts that fits him nicely. Between his arthritis meds and that tshirt, he is more comfortable. And for me, that's the most important part.

We're still dealing with weightloss and the cancer... but if I can at least keep him comfortable from the other two things, we can deal with the other two now. I'm handfeeding him puppy food, and feeding him treats throughout the day to try and see if he will gain anything at all. Instead of losing. We're fearful it may be the cancer that is preventing him from getting any of the nutrients from the food.

We're working day by day with his vet for his care. My biggest thing is he must be comfortable, and nothing invasive because his body is just too fragile.

Just wanted to share a little about him and what we're going through. I lurk on this board mostly, but you are all very knowledgeable and helpful with what you post.

  • Sounds like a nice improvement.  With so much going on, I'd be thrilled with those results.

  • I'm so sorry you're dealing with all of this at once, but it sounds like you're really thinking about maintaining the best quality of life possible for him. He's very lucky to have someone like you loving and taking care of him.

Totally. And you are making well-informed and caring decisions, especially being through this before. T&Ps for your furbaby and for you being a great furmommy.
