I'm all ragey and sad about my mom this morning (sad, pet related)

Last night I was talking to her about my trip to see everyone in KS next week. She then mentions she is having one her cats put to sleep. He's 8 or 9 years old, I think. Anyways, all of a sudden, he's peeing everywhere in the house.

Instead of bringing him to the vet and diagnosing him, she came straight out and said "I don't want to spend time and money on it".

OMG. She works for a vet. She gets it all done at a discount, could do a payment plan, the whole bit. But she doesn't feel like it, so she's having him put down.

I'm so angry.

  • Yeah, that's not ok.  Especially since she could literally just take him into work with her and have him checked out.  You'd think working at a vet and seeing ppl lose pets on a regular basis would make her a little softer to the situation.

  • Wow.  Knowing how you are about your pets, I can't imagine how you must feel.  I'm not a pet person by any means, but damn...all she'd have to do is take the cat in to work with her!  At least find out what the fvvck is wrong before you give up.

    Sorry Otter.  ((hugs))

Sorry, Ang...I should have put a warning or something in the title.

Thanks, everyone. I'm surprised that the vet would do that, but it's like my mom said...he doesn't make people's decisions. He has to respect what she wants, but it's not freaking right.

Man, I wish I could. I'm really upset with myself, but I can't for several reasons.

    1) She won't wait until I get there next month.

    2) I would have a very, very difficult time introducing him to my cats I already have.

    3) I have a pet limit at the townhouse.

I'm so mad about it that I kind of want to cancel my trip out there.

Is there a chance that the vet she will take it to, to be euthanized will be compassionate, and not put it down without examining it or seeing if there is an easy fix?

He's pretty much thinking that he has to do what my mom wants. The sad reality is that there are TONS of people out there that would rather having a pet put down than seek proper medical care. He can encourage her to do that, but he can't make her, KWIM?

That's true...it just really sucks. I will never understand people that have pets and aren't willing to care for it, or financially able to. It makes me sad when people don't value their pets. Sad

There is so much about my mother that I judge and I wonder all the time why I talk to her at all. She can be awesome, but there is stuff that she sucks about so bad it's not even funny.

  • Wow. That is so sad. I would be ragey too.

So many people said I'd be better off putting Whisky down when he was diagnosed with cancer last year - because who wants to deal with giving a cat medicine every day and paying for all those tests? It infuriated me. People shouldn't have pets if they aren't willing to take care of them.

This.  I would take him in a heartbeat if I could :(

  • See, I know I'm the kind of person that wouldn't want to spend time and money on the healthcare of a pet.  Therefore I DON'T KEEP PETS!  Why did your mom get the cat in the first place if she didn't want to take care of it?

Please tell me she won't be getting any more animals?

  • Ugh. I am so sad too. Having all those options available to her, euthanasia shouldn't be one of them

If she has plans to, I will personally duct tape her to a chair.

  • You could let her know what once she starts peeing HERSELF, you'll be putting her down as well.

    Yes

  • Aww, this makes my heart hurt. I don't understand that way of thinking, (especially with all the options she has through work!) because my pets are my kids. I wish there was something I could do Otter, I know I'd be ragey and upset enough to second guess my visit, too. Sad

OMG, yes! I'm sure there will be other animals...this is, sadly, nothing new. There isn't much commitment to animals. All the issues I've had with Foxxy are issues my mom wouldn't have dealt with...she would have rehomed or even put her down, which is sad because she's a good dog and just needed someone to work with her. It's amazing how different I am from the rest of my family.
