Need name ideas for a male maine ***

Assuming our home visit goes well this weekend, we will be adopting a 3ish year old male Maine ***, currently named Ford by the rescue.  I'm looking for other name ideas!  Thank you!

  • What is the dogs personality like? I've found it easier to name out pets have I've spent some time with them.
  • I have a dog, but we are adopting a cat - he's big - around 20lbs.  A real calm, shy guy that just let me pick him up and nestled right into my arm.  He's quite regal looking once he actually gets comfortable to sit up and not crouch and hide.  He's the tabby/gray typical mainecoon coloring.

  • You can't say c00n on TN? Wow. I need to see a picture of the cat before I give names :)

Ah! I saw "maineCOON" and thought dog. :D

Hmm...I've never seen this breed before - I googled them, but I'd want to see pictures, too!

  • Miller. but only because my gram had one growing up and that was his name. :o)

I agree... need a pic before I can say!

  • I've always wanted to name a cat Ralph for some reason...not that you need to name your cat that.

    Rosco was almost Ralph...

  • I've got a 2 yo Mainecoon who was named Jester at the rescue.. and I just couldn't keep that name..  hated it...  so I had planned to name him Merlin (He's grey, reminded me of Merlin in sword in the stone) but the day we picked him up and brought him to my sisters place with wood floors for a few mins on the way him, he started running and sliding on the floors and smacking into the walls..  I made some comment about how maybe we should call him crash, since that's what he tends to do, and it stuck.  Almost two years later, Crash still lives up to his name!

So, maybe bring him home and see if inspiration strikes you in the first day or so.  Maybe he will help come up with a name on his own like my Crash did.

  • My mom's Mainecoon is named Woodstock, but mostly they call him Fuzzy or Fuzzy Cat. He's really mean, though, so it totally doesn't fit his personality. :-)

I had a Norwegian Forest Cat (similar in coat and characteristics to a Mainecoon) who was blue in color and his name was Nimbus - because his color and fluffy coat made him look like a rain cloud. You could think of fluffy, puffy, cloudy things and try to grab some inspiration from that! Also, Maincoons are from Maine (duh), and are thought to be possibly Norwegian Forest Cats or other European cats who mated in New England and evolved into the thick-coated cat of today out in the woods of Maine... so you could think of nature-sounding names? Rocky, River, Forrest, Cougar.

  • Jethro. But then i think jethro is a fabulous per name in general.

  • I like the name Bubba.  But honestly, I have two cats and it's my generic go-to nickname for either of them.

Also, what about Nelson or Louie?  Both names come do mind when I picture a mainecoon.

  • For some reason there are no pics of him on the rescue's pet list - I know they had trouble getting his photo because he is very shy but he looks like this:

My girls are fond of the name Brody all of the sudden.  We are still (well, I am still) considering lots of options thinking when he comes to live with us it will be more clear.  Our home visit is scheduled for Saturday at noon!
