Spay question

Nala is 11 weeks now, and due for her final round of shots next week. I'm wondering when is the earliest I can get her spayed, and about when do heat cycles start. Our neighbors have 2 dogs that aren't neutered, they're pretty good but I don't want to put temptation right outside their fence. I would like to get it done before she ever goes through a heat cycle.

Re: Spay question

  • We got Ziva spayed at about 7 months and she hadn't gone into heat yet. We got her at about 6 months and she hadn't had any shots. The vet did them in two rounds, three weeks apart and told us to pray while we waited to be able to fix her.

Live always been of the impression that you want to do it around 6 months.

  • typically 6 months is the recommendation. that gives dogs enough time to mature so they are better able to cope with surgery but it is before their first heat cycle. coming into heat varies greatly among dogs. Typically smaller dogs come into heat earlier than larger dogs. usually 8 months is considered the very earliest it could happen. more likely in the 9- 12 month ranger

  • G got spayed at 6 months and had not yet had her first heat.  If you're going to see the vet next week anyway it couldn't hurt to ask his or her recommendation then,

  • Awesome, thank y'all!

Oh and I think y'all will proud to know that Nala is potty trained now:) Y'all's advice helped so much, and I still expect a few accidents b/c she's young but she's so good about going to the door and whining for us. I am one proud Momma!

  • I have what I would consider a medium/largish dog - she's 65lbs now at 11 months.  We had her spay scheduled at 7 months and she went into heat the week it was scheduled.  I couldn't beleive it!  We had to postpone her spay a month and a half.  I know some say it is better to wait, but having a female in heat is not fun!

  • Zoey's was done smack dab at the 6-month mark (just a couple of days before her half birthday, hehe). There was no way I was risking her going into a heat cycle.
