Amazing Race Themed Kick-Off Party

So, I am in charge of the youth group portion of our church's Vacation Bible School again this year.  We've already ordered our curriculum (we do the same general theme as the kids, but at youth level).  The overall theme of VBS is aviation/travel.  The youth component is set up with an Amazing Race theme (pit stops, every day you're in a different country, etc.).

We always do a kick-off party to get the youth excited for the year.  This year's kick-off party is set for May 6th (VBS is the middle of June-we always do it a month out).  I'm hoping you ladies can help suggest some ideas for the kick-off.

1. Decorations?

2. Snacks?

3. Any other tips?

TIA!

Re: Amazing Race Themed Kick-Off Party

  • I dont have any specific ideas but Oriental Trading does VBS stuff.

I would make a decoration/poster for each country you plan to "visit" during VBS.  Or if its not too hard, research a common snack/app from each country and print off a little sign for in front of each with the country and name of snack.

  • Deocorations I'd do the red and yellow.  I like the idea of doing snacks from the countries or if there is something in the teachings or songs that mention snacks (ours always had a soundtrack).  I'm trying to think of something where they would rip open an envelope or something with a backpack.  I'll have to think.
  • World flags or Amazing Race logo posters - I'd actually lean towards Amazing Race stuff because it's "cooler".  Maybe have a big screen playing an episode of the Amazing Race, at least until everyone arrives.  It's possible some people have not seen the show.  Would be fun to have a challenge activity like the ones they have in the show. For snacks, maybe heard to Trader Joe's or the "World Foods" aisle of the supermarket and see what looks good.  Or make fortune cookies with messages like, "You will make new friends at VBS!"
  • You might post this on the Entertainment Board.  There are several people that watch the show that might have some good ideas for party stuff.
