I have a new active and crazy pastime! :)

Ever heard of slacklining?  It kinda blew up right after the SuperBowl when Andy Lewis was featured doing it during Madonna's halftime show but my friends have been doing for the past few years.  I took advantage of the great weather yesterday and spent the afternoon with some girlfriends and finally gave it a try- there were no boys there so I wasn't embarrassed to keep on falling, getting back up and trying it again.  I had such a great time.  Today, i got a notice from The Clymb, an active outdoor equipment supplier, that slacklines were on sale for like half price- it seemed like a sign- so I jumped at it and bought one for myself.  Now my girlz and I can practice using a bunch of our own lines.

Here's a vid of my friend Crazy Crawford slacking in Pittsburgh:

Since I purchased a helmet cam last week (all because of Ala- she shared a Groupon deal not going on in my state- thanks, grrl!) I can now make my own vids of myself slackin'.  Wahooo!

Re: I have a new active and crazy pastime! :)

  • Yup!  My step daughter and her friends are super into it also.
  • I am still confused as to what it is? I can't watch the video at work. Bummer.

I didn't watch the video but I know what it is because my friends have been doing it for years...

It's a nylon rope tied between two things (trees, for example) and you balance on it (like a tight rope) but it has slack (hence slacklining) so it requires a lot of effort.

  • It is a supergood core workout, too!  I read that as we get older we lose our sense of balance and I thought it might be a good way to try and keep ahold of that since I'm in my late 30s and have noticed that I don't have the balance I had when I was young.  The guys I chill with are focused on doing big tricks- jumps from line to line, highlining, etc- but I want to focus on trying to do more graceful moves- yoga poses and stuff... as soon as I can stay on the line for more than a few minutes at a time.  :)
  • Sounds fun!  I saw it on the Super Bowl but didn't realize that's what it was called.  I get emails from the Clymb too and was like WTF is a slackline?  Now I know :)
  • I would bust my ass!

  • Awesome! We have a slackline at my rock gym that I play on sometimes. That thing is crazy hard, so I'm amazed at the people who can flip and jump around on them.

  • I saw a group on Conan doing this.  It looks like so much fun!  They were doing jumps and flips off and onto it, and they had one 12 year old boy who was CRAZY good at it.  MH exact words: "Well, that'll be an X-Games sport in 2 years."
