Help! Pet Shipping Recommendations

I'm hoping someone on this board can assist me with finding a reputable pet shipper or has experience with shipping dogs in the USA.

I have a job assisgnment that is taking me out of the country for a few months and the person we had lined up to house/dog sit has changed their mind.  Since I leave in about 9 days, my parents (In N. California) have volunteered to take in my fur-babies until Hubby comes home in 3-4mo.  Although I've travelled with dogs in the past I've never had to ship them alone & don't know where to begin. I have this great fear of them being lost/misplaced or dying in the cargo hold. (Although I suppose they could end up at some lost luggage store in Alabama...)

If I had more time, I would obvisouly drive/fly them to Cali myself, but since I have to hire movers to pack up the house also & prepare for overseas by next wkd, this is not exactly feasible timewise.  Thankfully both dogs are healthy (and long nosed!), up to dat on shots & microchipped - but neither has flown before & I know this is going to be crazy stressful for them (and me).

Any advice/recommendations you can provide will be greatly appreciated!!

Re: Help! Pet Shipping Recommendations

  • PetAirways maybe? I wish I could help but I'm not familiar with them at all.

I'm thinking of the airline that flies only animals.

  • You could try a pet airline, but they have very limited airports that they fly in and out of, so I've never had a chance to use one.  Logically, they sound amazing if you can swing it.  Otherwise, I would avoid American Airlines.

We've flown our dog 4 times now and haven't had any problems.  Are you saying you've never flown your dogs before or you've never flown them alone before?

  • I had a really bad experience wtih Pet Airways, so I don't recommend them.

Short Version:  Pet Airways was supposed to fly our foster to her forever home in CA from Colorado.  They cancelled the flight and failed to notify me.  They had no additional flights scheduled for over a month.  I found out the flight was cancelled because my vet had called them for information ~3 days before the flight.  Getting the refund was a huge pain and I had to drive her halfway to CA myself (18 hours round trip).

  • Thank you all for the information -I was able to look into Pet Airways, but their lack of anything close by was a dealkiller.  As for commercial airlines, I started looking into them when I had a friend volunteer to drive them. (she's doing a cross country road trip)  So for the price of gas & and expenses, my pups won't be earning their wings, until Hubby returns.  (When i used to fly with my other dogs, I never had such problems!)

Anyway, Thank you again for your suggestions!
