Mid-Run fueling- not gus or beans?

The sugar in gus and beans and chews are too much for me.

Any other suggestions?   Someone suggested one of those squeeze packets of Justins Peanut Butter for calories and carbs?

  • You could try trail mix or just some dried fruit.

  • I love the Honey Stinger chews.  They're not as sickeningly sweet as some of the others.  I like the Orange Blossom and Cherry Blossom the best, but all of the flavors are awesome.  I use the ones without caffeine.

  • I read somewhere (Runners World maybe) that in a recent study, people were given mini boxes of Sun Maid raisins and they wound up liking them just as much as GUs or Sport Beans. I've also heard of people eating the mini Fig Newtons as fuel too, but I'm not sure if that's still too much sweet stuff for you.

I like these. They are really yummy and easy to eat. But I usually need to eat it with water, because if my mouth is too dry, it can feel sticky.

Some people in my running group eat peanut m&m's, which seems like fun...

Otherwise, I have powerbar energy blasts (gels, but not too sweet or sticky) and salt packets are a must

During my last half some *saint* was handing out"orange slices" - honestly they were like the nectar of the gods since the race had run out of fuel (nice, RNR Las Vegas)!  Anyway, my plan on longer runs is an orange slice or two now!

  • Thanks- all good ideas.  I only have one more long run (12) before my half so I'll play around with it.  I'm honestly not even sure I need it and I sometimes feel worse after I take a gu but I want to keep experimenting!
  • I like the shot blocks.  I find them to be much less sweet than gu and sports beans.  good luck!

I prefer soft candies to gus or chot blocks.  I usually get some type of gummy bears or jolly rancher chews.   They might still be too sweet for you, but it is worth a try.
