Penny...

has bladder stones. They're going to have to be surgically removed, so I'm waiting for the specialist to get in touch with our vet so we can figure out when to do it.

The good news is that once this issue is cleared up, our vet thinks that the treatments we were using for interstitial cystitis will start working again. He thinks this was a separate issue, so at least we know what we have to do now.

Penny and I appreciate all the dust and kind thoughts. :)

Re: Penny...

  • Dear God...the poor thing.  Are stones the same as crystals?  Max had crystals before he was dx'ed with FIC.

Omg...poor poor Penny.  I'm so glad she has you to advocate for her!

  • Poor Penny. Sorry to hear she needs surgery, but I guess a diagnosis is progress at least. T&P for her!

From what I've researched, stones can be caused by the same "material" that causes crystals, but they're bigger and stay in the bladder instead of being passed out in the urine. Or they can be caused by a mineral buildup without ever having crystals present in the urine in the first place, which is what happened with Penny. She never had crystals, so...I don't know. They can also be caused by tumors, but the vet didn't SEE any tumor, so he said IF there is one, it must be very small and it will be removed during surgery.

Still haven't set a date for the surgery, but it'll be soon, I'm sure. Technically they can cause a blockage if left untreated, but apparently that's more of an issue in male cats since their urethra is smaller.

We'll get her fixed up. I'm grateful to have her. She's just such a sweet cat...I think she's my "favorite". Don't tell the others. lol

Plus DH has been great. I expected him to freak out about all the money, although I knew he would agree to spend it, but he hasn't even been worried about it. He said "whatever it takes" is worth it. Pretty impressive for a man who said he didn't like cats before he met me. ;)

  • This sounds crazy, a little, but I'm so happy you finally have a diagnosis and its something easily treatable, even if the treatment is surgery.

Sending good healing/get well soon vibes to miss Penny!

Thanks! I'm happy, too. :) I told the vet, "I never thought I'd be so freaking excited about bladder stones". lol

  • Poor Penny!  But I'm so glad you found the answer!  Best wishes for a quick and easy recovery!

  • Get well soon Penny!
