My first flower bed

I am hoping for some advice. I recently moved into my first house and I am looking forward to sprucing up my front yard with a small flower bed. I have no clue where to start. I would like something pretty and low maintance but colorful. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Including good sites to look at for my own inspriation.

Re: My first flower bed

  • Lilies are always easy to keep up and are beautiful.  I like them because they come up year after year.  They come in several different colors.  Hosta are also easy.  Enjoy your first garden.
  • I would suggest thinking about how much work you want to have (you mentioned low maintenance, but that could be a few different things) and what levels of sunlight you have (mostly shade, even mix, mostly sun).  Then you'll have some starting guidelines for what types of plants to put in.  I think flower beds can be somewhat tricky, so without knowing your tastes, your yard, or your climate, I would consider doing some combination of the two (annuals and perennials) and try to look for plants that bloom at different times, so that you've always got some flowers to enjoy.  Good luck!
