Newbie question

Hello everyone!

I live in an apartment and have potted plants I'm starting this year from seeds. I've got sunflowers, wildflowers, gerber daisies and strawberries.

I live in CT and am wondering when would be the right time for me to plant them? Also, we have bird food out on our balcony where the potted plants are going to be. Will the seeds be "safe" from the birds or should I do something to deter them from the plants and stick to the birdseed thats out for them?

Thanks!

Re: Newbie question

  • If I were you I would look at how much sun your balcony gets.  Last year my husband and I started herb/veggie seeds indoors (in late Jan/early Feb) but because our balcony got no direct sunlight (until we moved to the west side of our apt complex in July), we didn't get very good results.

I'm waiting (we live in CO) a few more weeks to look for seedlings for this summer, just because starting from seed was so frustrating to me last year.  I'm not sure what the weather's like in CT right now, but you could start them inside and just set them in a sunny window until they are ready to be transplanted outside.  (You don't need a fancy set-up, just an egg carton or some small paper cups, soil, and sunlight--just be careful not to overwater.  I've started seeds on cotton balls in a nutrient/water solution before... the seeds will sprout so long as they have the right balance)  I don't have a lot of experience with potting the flowers you mentioned, but if I were you I would also check to make sure the pots will have enough root space for the wild flowers and sunflowers (the daisies too, I think), as I've only seen these in the ground (as perennials).

    Best of luck!

    Anniversary
