So frustrated with the pee :-(

Lily was doing well not peeing outside the box in the cat room, so I started locking her in my room instead, so she could be with us at night. After a few days, she started peeing in there again too. :(  Boo!

So, she's back in the cat room, and using the box in there. I'm so tired of the pee. I am on my second huge bottle of NM, and also on my second blacklight, with a third coming in the mail, because they don't seem to be working great - I can still smell pee. So twice I day I crawl around on my hands and knees, sniffing the carpet, and reapplying the NM.

I feel so bad that she is so stressed and so unhappy... I am also so stressed about this! NO MORE PEEING LILY!!

I don't know what else to do other than give it more time. I have another diffuser on the way too, plus I'm using the spray, although she seems to avoid the places I use the Feliway spray. I love the boys so much but I think I probably should not have brought them home.  :(  Ugh!

Re: So frustrated with the pee :-(

  • Ugh, that sucks.  I know exactly what you're talking about, I've done the crawling around sniffing, and spent hours using using nature's miracle, the carpet steamer, a couple other carpet cleaners (woolite and something in a red bottle, I can't remember the name right now, but it's a popular and usually good carpet cleaner).

Anyway, this is what finally got rid of the smell (or at least as much as I could smell it):  http://www.ehow.com/how_6738658_clean-dish-soap_-peroxide-mixture.html.  It worked like an absolute charm, but was pretty time intensive (and was dog pee, not cat pee).

  • {{hugs}} The peeing went on for a while with us once we let J and SB have free roam of the house.

You're probably already doing this, but we would drench the area where they peed.  I'm sure we wasted some NM, but I think it helped.

How long have you had the boys?

  • I think that NM and Feliway can both take a little while to work too.  I know it sucks but maybe she needs her own space for a couple of weeks.

  • Thanks for the tips and support ladies.

We've had the boys for 2 months now.

I was thinking about it more tonight and I think the reason I'm SO stressed about all this, is because I had Lily and KittyCat for over 10 years... one sleeping on my feet and one on my head. Now I've lost my sweet KittyCat, and locking Lily away makes me feel like I've practically lost her too.

It breaks my heart to have her in another room, to know that she must still be grieving over losing her other half, and to know that she's so stressed out that she's peeing out of the box for the first time in 11 years.

    My poor girl :(

Did I ask you if they were bothering her near the box? I can't remember. I feel like I did.  Do you let her out supervised when you are home?

I haven't seen them bother her. I think When the peeing started, one of her original boxes was in the basement (where it had always been) and the kittens didn't yet know how to use the cat door, so she had lots of privacy. Also, when she pees in my room, she's in there alone with the other cats locked out.  Once I tried putting the box exactly where she was peeing in the living room, and she peed just next to it.

She does get to come out when we are home. So from about 6pm to 10pm on the weekdays. As far as I can tell, she only pees when we are gone or sleeping.

  • The other thing that frustrates me is trying to figure out the dynamic between the cats. It doesn't SEEM like there is much wrong. In fact, just this afternoon, I came upstairs and all 3 were swarming me. Lily & Spencer did some head butts/rubbing against each other. Then Lily flopped down purring and rolled over for me to rub her belly. She seemed so relaxed and happy in their presence. What the heck Lily!?

  • Hopefully it just will take some more time for everyone to adjust.  I think it took our guys a couple months to settle down, and we didn't have a loss to deal with like Lily did/does.
