No accidents in crate - can we put in a dog bed? PIP

xtina78xtina78 member

Hey everyone,

Winnie our three month samoyed is doing well. We haven't had any accidents in the crate since the very beginning and the housetraining is going well. Still accidents of course but we are down to 0-2 per day. What I am wondering is, would it be a good idea to now put a dog bed into her crate? I feel like it would be so much more comfy for her if we did so. I am worried though that it could cause her to pee in the crate since it will soak it up. Any thoughts?

 Thanks!

  • We didn't give Quincy an actual bed in his crate until he had had zero accidents for a couple weeks.  Before then, we did give him a towel to lie on. I don't think it hindered his training any, and it was a little more comfy than hard crate-bottom.  FWIW there were no accidents when we switched him from the towel to the bed.

  • She might surprise you that she doesn't even want it and would move it out of the way, especially with summer coming.  I tried putting a bed or a towel in my boy's crate and he moves it out of the way.  We ended up buying metal crate pans because he likes it extra cool compared to plastic.

I personally wouldn't try it yet though, wait until she is older and accident free just to avoid starting any problems.

any tendency to eat things while crated?

(Dawg = not allowed to have stuff in her crate for that reason)

  • My dad and brother have 6 month old Lab/Rottweiler mixes who got beds in their crates around that age, and they had different reactions. Sam adores his and now he only sleeps out of it if he can still snuggle into something. Nala tore four beds apart before my dad finally agreed to give up and just try a towel, which she sleeps on and has never chewed. Your pup is probably old enough and trained enough to use a bed, but you should supervise at first to make sure she doesn't decide to tear it up and eat the stuffing.

  • Thanks for everyone's responses. It sounds like the prudent thing to do will be to wait until she's a little older. Thanks again!!
